Historia
Off the coast of New Zealand, there's an underwater mining facility 8,000 feet under the ocean. The crew stationed there knows that drowning is the least of their worries at such depths. That's why they panic when a maintenance member goes missing while out on a repair mission. There's something far worse down there than the crushing pressure, the ticking timers on their oxygen tanks, and the everlasting darkness that inhabits such depths. And it's hunting them one by one.

Decent story, terrible narration
Revisado: 11-16-24
The story was OK, although it felt like it was not fully flushed out. Characters settings and concept all had a lot of potential, but nothing had enough detail to make it worth investing a lot of attention into. As others have mentioned, the narration was absolutely awful. The narrator has a tinny, echoing type sound. It almost seems as if they recorded the work inside a hall. Coupled with the fact that he does not know where to emphasize a sentence made for a very cringey and unpleasant listen. I think if the author had spent more time focussed on the mermaid aspect and setting up the actual settings, this could’ve been quite a good book. As it stands, I would read it if you had an extra credit you were trying to use up, but be mindful of the fact that the narrator is very difficult to listen to.

She is resigned to the mundane rituals of old age, until things start to slip. Before her longtime partner passed away years earlier, provisions were made, unbeknownst to her, for a room in a unique long-term care residence, where Penny finds herself after one too many “incidents.”

This dystopian tale of Dr Frankenstein and Egor has no resolution, no purpose. As a study in depression this aggregation of chapters of words is truly unfortunate. Now to go take a walk in reality.

Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Fantastic Read
Revisado: 05-10-18
I completely enjoyed this book. I thought that it was an honest and insightful discussion about women’s rights, being fat, our modern Internet culture, being a girl and family all spun into a humourous package. I’m not much for reviews but this is definitely worth a listen. I finished it in less than a day and found that even though Lindy West’s life is really nothing like my own there was much for me to take from it and learn from. She’s got a way with words that makes you feel powerful but also makes you aware of your responsibility to each other as humans. I was actually not aware of her work prior to reading this book but found I was intrigued by the way she talked about her life. I’m interested in seeing and hearing more about her. As for her amassed angry haters who can’t stand her stance and views, I feel her book speaks for itself. She shows the humanity and kindness that we need so much in this world and neatly shuts down the abuse in a humble (albeit somewhat sarcastic but funny) way. Good job Lindy!

Sigh
Revisado: 02-15-18
I consider this book a ‘my bad’. I should have known what I was getting into ( I mean it says LitRPG on the cover) but damned if this thing doesn’t read like literally watching someone grind though an mmo. I feel like I watched someone play a game that has no ending. There is no purpose to the characters life and no goal to the book. It goes on and on, endlessly prattling stats and taking about how awesome the main character is. He is the best at all the stuff. We get it! I’m stubborn so I finish what I start, but I would suggest that it is more entertaining to simply play a game. There are moments of humour that I did enjoy but weighted against the non-stop ramble of this guys life it just isn’t enough for me to continue the series. Hats off to Mr. Nick Podehl who’s performance as always is spectacular ( and the predominant reason I made it through the book). I recommend passing this one unless your into backseat gaming and stats. So many stats.

Captain Eric Weston and his crew encounter horrors, wonders, monsters, and people; all of which will test their resolve, challenge their abilities, and put in sharp relief what is necessary to be a hero. A first-rate military-science-fiction epic that combines old-school space opera and modern storytelling, Into the Black: Odyssey One is a riveting, exhilarating adventure with vivid details, rich mythology, and relentless pacing.

Yeah....
Revisado: 03-11-17
If you are into military thrillers that are quite thorough this ones for you. I definitely thought this one would be more alien vs human but it was a little more lighthearted ( somewhat inane ). The person who mentioned that it's ridiculous that humans venture out into space only to find a colony of aliens that display an uncanny similarity to humans, is very accurate. I mean it does seem a little unlikely. I also had a bone to pick with the repetition of certain expressions: 'she snapped to attention', 'he snapped orders', 'he snapped on the phone', 'she snapped her snaps!' I found it grating at times but that may have just been me. I thought the narrator was pretty good. He was able to a fair job of various voices. For the story, I think I'll pass on any future books. This one isn't bad. It's just too lengthy where it doesn't matter. I don't usually enjoy hours of narration about trying to fight a single ship. I can't even say it's particularly exciting. Just really, really thorough and very long. Oh snap!

Historia
Exposing the many lies told on and off the psychoanalyst's couch, Lying on the Couch gives listeners a tantalizing, almost illicit glimpse at what their therapists might really be thinking during their sessions. Fascinating, engrossing, and relentlessly intelligent, it ultimately moves listeners with a denouement of surprising humanity and redemptive faith.

Umm?
Revisado: 01-24-17
Although this book has a lot of positive reviews I was more or less indifferent. I can't help but notice while reading it that there's a distinctive lack of female therapists. There are of course two ancient women therapists their claim to fame seems to be through blood line rather than actual accreditation. The book is a black comedy of sorts and although clever in some ways I did find that the narcissistic characters tended to get on the nerves. The reading is good as well but the narrator does not have a range of female voices ( to be fair in this book it doesn't seem to matter ). In someways everybody gets their dues but I wasn't overwhelmed with the story.

Don't waste a credit on this one.
Revisado: 01-03-17
I thought this book was exceedingly tedious coupled with a narrator who tends to sound like he has marbles in his mouth, it was a struggle to get through the three hours that it took. The story is a go nowhere plot that walks in boring circles. I found the main character patronizing and somewhat cliché. Although I'm sure the narrator had all good intentions in mind when he read the story, he has nowhere near the enthusiasm to make it exciting nor even entertaining. In reality I found myself zoning out and missing segments and having to go back to relisten. If the story had been any longer I would not of made it through. If you're a fan of the series then this might be more par for the course but as someone who picked this up as a stand alone listen I found it barely tolerable. I would skip this one.

Revisado: 10-21-16
An entertaining and interesting read. The performance was excellent as others have mentioned and the story I found to be solid and fascinating. Although I don't really think of Joe Hill's books as true horror, I liken them to dark fables of sorts and they tend to have an element of Charles De Lint's, magic is real, vibe.

Revisado: 10-12-16
I found the book decently scary. Although I didn't like the main character, I suspect that was intentional. I didn't it the most clever of writing, but definitely an enjoyable listen. The only thing I would've liked to have changed was the super annoying musical interludes at odd times.

Historia
For over 20 years, Belasco House has stood empty. Regarded as the Mt. Everest of haunted houses, its shadowed walls have witnessed scenes of unimaginable horror and depravity. All previous attempts to probe its mysteries have ended in murder, suicide, or insanity.

A wealthy publisher, brooding over his impending death, has paid a physicist and two mediums to establish the facts of life after death once and for all. Like a crappy horror movie
Revisado: 07-17-15
The book is relatively long and boring read in my opinion. I like scary and this one didn't even have its moments. That said, I am pretty hard to scare. I particularly dislike the constant reliance of the two female characters being so reliant on the two men. It seems the moment they walk into the house they become slaves to their baser instinct and submit to constant sexual harassment from the house ( although the men seem to be immune, don't ask me why - there's a great detail of discussion as to the perverse nature of the house and how it affected both the ladies and the gentlemen but with the current lot only the women seem subjected to it). I do you think that Ray Porter did an excellent job of portraying the voices as described by other reviews. Overall the story has enough 'action' to keep you listening but there are scenes that made me want to fast forward simply because of the absurdity of it. I dunno about you but once a house tried to kill me 2 or 3 times I might be inclined to learn my lesson and go. I guess that's why it's fiction ( and entertaining?). I did make it through but in the future I'll use my credit for something a little wiser.
