A good story, read well.
Revisado: 02-04-25
There are a lot of stories out there about adolescents going to magic boarding schools but no other series I’ve read with that general concept does such an excellent job integrating “real” mythology into the setting half as effectively as this one.
I loved it as a text book series first and was happily as pleased with the audio version, voices always fit the characters, who themselves are interesting and believable, and pacing was excellent.

Historia
When The Sandman, also known as Lord Morpheus - the immortal king of dreams, stories and the imagination - is pulled from his realm and imprisoned on Earth by a nefarious cult, he languishes for decades before finally escaping. Once free, he must retrieve the three “tools” that will restore his power and help him to rebuild his dominion, which has deteriorated in his absence.

Excellent adaptation of classic graphic novels
Revisado: 08-03-20
I loved the Sandman comics (and related off-shoots) when I was younger, they were what I read instead of "superhero" comics, and having never listened to an audiobook adaptation of a comic book I wasn't sure what to expect.
I was blown away. While content was added, it was only ever for the purpose of bringing to live the visual side of the original comics, allowing the "written" aspects of the comic to still be almost word for word, yet simultaneously describing the imagery so vividly in combination that I could see the original panels of the graphic novel pages in my mind.
I could see how some listeners might find the additional content for those descriptions disruptive, but I felt it was done as smoothly and minimally as possible, maintaining the feel of the original comics and characters. Because the graphic novels are a series of separate, linked stories, I also thought the separation of the stories with breaks and "chapter headings" for lack of the correct descriptor also helped maintain the original feel of reading a graphic novel too.
I would be excited to listen to more.

Historia
She's 12. He's dead. But together they're going to save the world. Hopefully. The iconic first book in the best-selling Skulduggery Pleasant series. Stephanie's uncle Gordon is a writer of horror fiction. But when he dies and leaves her his estate, Stephanie learns that while he may have written horror it certainly wasn't fiction. Pursued by evil forces, Stephanie finds help from an unusual source - the wisecracking skeleton of a dead sorcerer....

Good overall but very clearly for YA audiences
Revisado: 08-03-20
I didn't realize this was a YA book before selecting it, but it shows in the simplicity of the story and dialogue. While a good book for a YA, it is not good enough to stand up to older readers with said simplicity.
While otherwise quite good, I would never re-read this due to said simplicity. Cool concepts, but without the depth or elevation to make it a good book for an adult to re-read, or want to pursue the series of, as with those YA authors I continue to read even 20+ years later.

Historia
One day, I’m married, living in Seattle, and magic isn’t real. The next, I’m divorced and living in the guest room of my ex’s hotter-than-sin cousin’s place in Savannah and talking to an animated skeleton named Robert. I have to admit, Robert isn’t my worst date. At 41, I didn’t think I’d be starting over. But I’ll be damned if my ex thinks I’m down and out because he pulled a fast one on me. When a job comes my way that offers me a chance to use my childhood training in the shadow world, I take it.

Just mediocre
Revisado: 08-03-20
I keep getting recommended this author and similar, but in the end her writing is just okay...nothing grabbed me, and I got tired really fast about the first-person main character's "oooh early menopause, all the hormones" internal monologues. Not up to the standards of the more interesting stories of authors the software algorithms recommended it to me based on my purchases of, quite disappointing. Good narration did not make up for mediocre story.

Historia
Welcome to Sunder City. The magic is gone, but the monsters remain. I'm Fetch Phillips, just like it says on the window. There are a few things you should know before you hire me: 1. Sobriety costs extra. 2. My services are confidential. 3. I don't work for humans. It's nothing personal - I'm human myself. But after what happened, to the magic, it's not the humans who need my help.

Disappointing...nothing seems to go anywhere
Revisado: 08-03-20
I kept waiting for the plot to go somewhere, and improve but ultimately the book was just mediocre and left me feeling ambivalent and disappointed.
Concepts and world-building/back-story are interesting but nothing builds from there, so it's not enough to make a good book all on its own.

Despite having their secret revealed, the residents of Melbrook Hall return to Lander University for another year in the Hero Certification Program. Good thing the focus of this year is teamwork, because with their origins known, they'll have to lean on each other more than ever. Now finally sophomores, their curriculum expands, allowing them to train in the majors that Heroes specialize in. The new classes will test their minds, bodies, and determination in ways never anticipated.

Excellent story, with better voices than book 1
Revisado: 07-28-16
I love the story, though there were some places where the differences between spoken and written words made things different or odd listening as compared to reading the passage from text one's self.
When I listened to the first book though, I found some voices for a few supporting characters to be weird and disruptively ridiculous-sounding. Thankfully I found those had been toned down and no longer detracted from the listening experience the way I'd found them to in the prior book. I am eagerly waiting for the release of book 3 as an audiobook.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Some silly voices but great story
Revisado: 05-18-16
Honestly I didn't care for the voices used for the adult characters in many cases. Some didn't match the characters well (wrong accents, etc.), and others were goofy, squeaky or nasal just to differentiate them. Not the best to listen to in that sense since these were not all side characters ...some are present throughout every book.
But despite how much this bothered me, I really loved the story. This writer always impresses me, and I've read this series several times. It holds up well to being read, and is wonderfully long. A great audiobook for long workdays.
