Although Victor Bayne is a valued asset of the FPMP, he still vividly recalls his PsyCop days: the eye rolls, the nasty looks, and the occasional utterance of the words Spook Squad whenever he showed up on a scene. So he really should empathize with Howard Jibben, the weekend lab manager known as Heebie Jeebie.

A Psycop Interlude
Revisado: 10-05-24
I'm a big fan of this series but found this outing to be the weakest of the lot. As the Psycop world is so engaging and fun I could excuse this slow exercise in claustrophobia with supernatural thrills. Don't get me wrong, if you are a fan it's worthwhile but I just wanted more. Once again Gomez Pugh does fantastic narration of the characters. Looking forward to more adventures out in the big outside world.

A Very Worthy 19th Century Mystery
Revisado: 08-26-24
Although the story started out rather slowly, it soon picked up speed and then it was hard to take out the earbuds between listening sessions. K.C. Charles has created some terrific characters here that you will enjoy spending time with while our main character Jeremy attempts to solve a decade old murder. Excellent place making in describing Oxford and surroundings. The narration by Tom Lawrence was also first rate as he had specific voices for all the characters that made listening quite a pleasure. I highly recommend this book for the mystery lover.

It’s 1984, and life has changed beyond recognition. Airstrip One, formerly known as Great Britain, is a place where Big Brother is always watching, and nobody can hide. Except, perhaps, for Winston Smith. Whilst working at the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history, he secretly dreams of freedom. And in a world where love and sex are forbidden, where it’s hard to distinguish between friend and foe, he meets Julia and O’Brien and vows to rebel.

Terrific Presentation of a Great Novel
Revisado: 05-17-24
I really enjoy the first-class production values that audible puts into their immersive listening experiences making them must hear events that can be enjoyed on a different level than just having a single narrator. The entire production is first rate and well worth your attention. The quality of the acting by Andrew Garfield really makes you feel the emotions of the character and the rest of the cast are all truly excellent. I love the sound design and music that envelopes you with the creative use of Dolby Atmos helping your imagination to put you right there in the drama. Another terrific job by Audible Originals. Please keep up the great work.

Historia
When John Rechy's explosive first novel appeared in 1963, it marked a radical departure in fiction, and gave voice to a subculture that had never before been revealed with such acuity. It earned comparisons to Genet and Kerouac, even as Rechy was personally attacked by scandalized reviewers. Nevertheless, the book became an international best seller, and 50 years later, it has become a classic. Bold and inventive in style, Rechy is unflinching in his portrayal of one hustling "youngman" and his search for self-knowledge.

An American Classic
Revisado: 04-02-24
I had read this novel years ago and liked it but hearing the audio version now was a revelation and I feel it has become an American classic. Although the subject matter takes place in the gay underworld of hustlers and marks on the downlow, this is not a sensationalist porn paperback but a serious novel of one man's journey from a small southwestern town to the underbelly of some of America's big cites as they existed in the 50-60's. So many memorable characters so vividly drawn and brought to life by the excellent narration by Paul Boehmer. This would be a great a literature double feature with Last Exit to Brooklyn as both give us a window into the lives of those living in the underbelly of the American dream that some never get the benefit of in the mid twentieth century. Well worth your time if you are adventurous and willing to take a tawdry walk on the wild side.

More Story and Less Porn Needed
Revisado: 10-18-23
I'm a big fan of Jordon Castillo Price but felt really let down by this M/M vampire romp. What we get here is what reminded me of one of those old gay porn paperbacks found in adult bookstores in the 70'sthat were called "one handers", the kind with the badly drawn skinny queens on the front in garish colors. Although as usual I enjoyed the characters and the simple plot of the book, there was just too much porn meat and not enough potatoes plot development to make this as good a work as the author's best. What makes it all work and worthwhile in audio form is the excellent narration by Gomez Pugh that brings all the characters to life. Every author has hits and misses and this book was a miss in my estimation.

Another Well Done Retelling of a Classic Story
Revisado: 08-24-23
Authoress Miller gives us another retelling of the Trojan War classic focused on the life and love of Achilles through the POV of his great love Patroclus. Bringing back memories of other classical love stories by Mary Renault this version is an exciting and memorable listen even for those who would normally shy away from a M M "romance novel. There is something here for everyone.
The narration by Frazer Douglas also does a lot to elevate the story and imbue life into all the various characters. I highly recommend this book be on your listening list.

Mediocre and Predictable Fantasy Novel
Revisado: 03-27-23
This is the kind of innocuous fantasy romance novel that passes the time but there is nothing really here to make it stand out as. I finished it but it's the kind of story that I will have forgotten about in a day or two. My suggestion is pass this one up for a different fantasy novel.

A Suspenseful Terrific Read
Revisado: 03-14-23
First off it wasn't until I was halfway through the novel that I realized that the author was the narrator and was shocked as usually authors do not do justice dramatically to their work. In this case I don't think a professional book narrator could do any better than Mr. Ellis does here. Well, he is quite familiar with the work and does a great job of interpreting the material. As he based the book on his experiences growing up it was amazing to me how detailed his memories were of the social and physical environments of the era described in such microscopic detail. This really gives an authenticity to the goings on that make you ask yourself if this really happened or is just fiction.
A number of the reviewers here have complained about the graphic violence of the serial killer's crime scenes and maybe they should stick to Murder She Wrote as the details of the twisted crime scenes add to the authenticity that makes the story so unsettling and engrossing. Also, there were a number of complaints about the detailing of the homosexual sex acts the main character engages in and once again may I suggest you stick to The Hallmark Channel if you're looking for romantic heterosexual sex. I felt that his portrayal of a bisexual young man leaning toward accepting his homosexual self was one of the best depictions of what the sex lives of experimenting American teenagers go through to be brilliant. This is the kind of sexual growing up many of us do as a teen and the presentation here is brilliant in showing the kind of sexual experimentations male teens go through without moralizing and easy pat answers to one's ultimate position on the human sexuality scale. An adult and honest look at another man's reality that I suppose makes some people uncomfortable but that's what great literature is supposed to do. The author explores his emotions and feelings in such an authentic way it is truly notable and makes as a wonderful piece of literature and not a horror/mystery novel.
So I highly recommend this book as an engrossing read that, if you are old enough, will put you back into 80's as they were lived by the more than well to do children of the Hollywood elite. The emotions of the characters are universal and end up makes you think about your own past teenage interactions. A terrific grisly read I just couldn't put down.

Horribly Disappointing In Every Way
Revisado: 02-12-21
As a huge fan of Ready Player One I, like so many others that have left comments here, was eagerly looking forward to this continuation of the story. It starts out OK but goes downhill fast and shows no real creativity or any of the qualities that made the first novel so enjoyable. I found it so disappointing that I really don't want to delve any deeper into it's failures as others have done a good job and because it isn't worth the effort to dissect it just as it isn't worth the time to read/listen to it. Wil Wheaton does his best with the material and that's as good of a review as I want to waste anymore of my energy thinking about it. Do yourself a favor and reread the first novel and pretend this one doesn't exist.

Another Ripping Tale Ruined By Poor Narration
Revisado: 09-06-19
Unlike some of the negative reviews here I enjoyed the story and felt it fit into the rest of the series. It's another ripping action tale that's lots of fun. However the piss poor choice of a narrator for this story really ruins it on many levels. Putting aside the fact that the voice actress has no southern accent the fact that they chose a voice that is best suited for narrating a fluffy urban romance novel is stupid to say the least. Julie should in my opinion sound more like Sigourney Weaver or Linda Hamilton, not Reese Witherspoon. This lousy narration shoots down an enjoyable story that should have earned more stars and fans. The worst narration I've ever heard from an audio book so far and I've heard a lot.
