Historia
Few warriors, in life or literature, have challenged their commanding officer and the rationale of the war they fought as fiercely as did Homer's hero Achilles. Today, the Iliad is celebrated as one of the greatest works in literature, the epic of all epics; many have forgotten that the subject of this ancient poem was war - not merely the poetical romance of the war at Troy, but War, in all its enduring devastation.

Excellent story and narrator
Revisado: 10-10-23
I’m not at all into wrestling and just found this book by chance. That said, it’s a fascinating tale about a real man’s man. Such men are crapped on by leftists these days and so have become “toxic masculinity” bogeymen in modern media. Such men ought to be lauded as they once were; strength (physical and moral), determination, and straight-talking are sorely lacking in modern society and their absence is sorely felt. Thus, it was heartening (and entertaining) to listen to Bob’s tale related by a narrator whose voice perfectly portrayed this capital M man.

Engrossing
Revisado: 07-12-23
I’ve never been one much interested in Ancient Egyptian history because the names, language, and writing system have always seemed out of reach for me. I’ve gravitated to Ancient Greek and Roman history because they are far less foreign and much easier to engage with since the languages live on in English and because they aren’t terribly difficult to learn in their own right. Dr. Ryan’s several books are wonderful and have made learning about the Ancient Egyptians much more accessible and, in this book, much more personal with the recounting of the lives of several Egyptians from all strata of their society during the course of a year. The narrator does an excellent job bringing further life to these people. I am actually sad that my time with this book is at an end. Dr. Ryan has single handedly open my heart to further investigation of this most impressive and antique of all cultures.

Historia
During the course of a day we meet twenty-four Athenians from all strata of society—from the slave-girl to the councilman, the vase painter to the naval commander, the housewife to the hoplite—and get to know what the real Athens was like by spending an hour in their company. We encounter a different one of these characters every chapter, with each chapter forming an hour in the life of the ancient city.

Another enthralling book by P. Matyszak
Revisado: 10-14-22
Few books I have ever read or listened to have left me saddened for their completion. “24 Hours in Athens” (and it’s sister, “24 Hours in Rome”) is just such a book. The author deftly and compassionately humanizes history.
I enjoyed the narrator’s voice and he does an admirable job at bringing further humanity to the book’s characters. His voice has a cheeky quality that really compliments some of the author’s dry wit. My only complaint is that he consistently mispronounces Greek names and words. By mispronounce, I mean that he doesn’t use the accepted English (or even Ancient Greek) pronunciations, e.g. “Tyche” (TIE-key) becomes “Tike” (rhymes with bike) and “Agoge” (a-GO-gay) becomes Agodj (rhymes with the cryptocurrency Doge Coin).
You will have no regrets buying this book.
