I enjoyed listening to this story, but I believe a lot of my enjoyment came from the delivery. The World building is fantastic. I will get book 2 just because I want to spend more time in Everfall

The protagonist is interesting to watch as are the other primary characters of the story. However, Shad has a lot to learn about character motivation, character voice, and making a cohesive plot. I think much of what made Dalin and company so fun to listen to had to do with Kramer and Readings delivery more than the words they were saying.

This book feels like a lot of set up with no real payoff. It is a character study, but I feel more could have happened to hint at Dalin's true purpose than was done in the story. In fact even with all the info-dumping, I don't think the main story was in this book. It feels like prequel to a series I missed somewhere. Like I am watching The Phantom Menace without ever having seen Star Wars.

I am subscribed to Shad's channel. I also watch Daniel Greene channel and he is the reason I finally decided to give the book a listen. I understand now why he did not give a star review for the story. The true value of this book will depend on what comes after. So the Greatest Bastard Everfall had known was restored to youth for no apparent reason. Dalin believes it was "the Light" whatever that means and so do other characters, but there is no real proof, other than one character's vision and even that is vague. I hope is this will be a test of Faith brought up in later books. Not only would that be very interesting, it would give some payoff to all the set up in Shadow of the Conqueror.

If you love world building, like I do and are a fan of the narrators, you will enjoy this.

Trigger warning. Dalin has past where he raped young girls. Shad doesn't glorify these actions, but he doesn't gloss over them either. Rape and it affects on victims of rape is discussed and is a plot point for much of the book. Dalin also kills very graphically. Dalin might have decided to fight for the Light, but he is no paragon.

Loved it. I was yelling at the characters, which means I was completely engaged. This story is fantastic. I can wait for the next. I call Jenna a tense because she hooks the reader and then pulls them all they way through. Nick does a fine job narrating as well.
