Historia
Like any other teenager, Jess Flynn is just trying to get through her junior year without drama...but drama seems to keep finding her. Between a new crush on her childhood best friend, overprotective parents cramping her social life, and her younger sister’s worsening health, the only constant is change - and her hometown of Swickley, which feels smaller by the day. Swickley is getting weirder by the day, too. Half the population has been struck down by a mysterious flu. Conversations end awkwardly when Jess enters the room.

Historia
To say Sheriff Natalie Strand is shocked that Sarah Eastman, the girl who kissed her at a high school party, is back in town would be a huge understatement. Between Sarah’s return and a stray dog that gets the best of her, Natalie’s world is suddenly turned upside down. They say you can’t go home again, but that’s exactly what Sarah does when she returns to Oregon to live with her aunt and uncle after her divorce. All she wants is peace and to ensure her daughter, Harley, has stability. Seeing Natalie again after 17 years ignites a passion that she hasn’t felt in a long time.

Only okay
Revisado: 11-04-20
I wanted to love this book so much I really really did. I love indie lesbian reads and this one sounded right up my ally especially with the golden retriever on the cover but sadly it fell flat for me.
I liked the characters okay but they just felt a little flat for me. The only character I really loved was the daughter. I loved her personality and how adorable she was. I just wished all the other characters had as much personality as her.
I also felt like the romance happened way to fast. I get they knew each other before and lesbians are sort of known for moving quickly but it just felt rushed. That was how I felt over all that it was rushed. I wish Bryant had maybe drawn the book out a bit longer to make things flow just a bit better.
Like I said over all this was a decent indie lesbian romance it is by no means the worst but its not my favorite either. I would read some other books by the author and I deffinatly want a physical copy of this one I just didn't think it was the best or really stood out like it could have.

I loved this unique take on this story! I was not expecting it to have some of the aspects that it did but I really enjoyed it. I only wish it was longer but thats okay because I plan of reading this author's full novels!

Amazing
Revisado: 10-26-20
I saw this book sometime at the beginning of the year and I was interested because of how dark and eerie the cover was but as soon as I read the description I was knew I had to have this book. All that said books like this tend to be hard to review due to the nature of the book and I just want to go ahead and say both the book and this review have some heavy trigger warnings for mention of rape and sexual asult.
The thing about a book like this is that you can never really enjoy it because of the subject but I was interested and couldn't put it down. The way Fargo chose to go ahead and open with such a visceral chapter with Scarlet is exactly what had me hooked. I knew from that moment this book was going to be a wild ride.
The thing I think I loved most about this book was how it didn't shy away from anything. Fargo did not try and pad this book or make it palatable. She made sure every second of this book was just as dark and hard to read as the subject it depicts warrants. While she never directly describes rape in this book she makes sure you know and feel not only the anger an act like this causes but also the shame it makes some people feel. The way it changes you and those around you.
Fargo also does an amazing job showing just how hard it is to get someone to listen, to believe, to care even. The acts every person in authority takes in this book so perfectly mirrors what so many survivors go though its sad. The way you see Carley's faith in a broken system fading with each new person she talks to and her anger growing with each and every let down she faces. She so perfectly sums up that even those we think we can trust can let us down and break us in the end.
If I had to makes any complaint about this book it would be that I saw both "twist" coming from the beginning but that didn't bother me. For me this book wasn't even really about that. It was about two women fighting for justice in a system that favors abusers and treats victims like liers. Its about two woman taking back control of their lives and bodies and standing up to pretext other woman.
This book was everything I wanted it to be and more! I would say if you can handle this book you should read it. Its such a fascinating take on rape culture and how the systum is set up to favor the attacker and not the victim. Oh and side bonus points its queer.

Great story
Revisado: 08-09-20
This book had a really solid concept and over all it did a decent job of relaying what it was trying to say. It took on a really tough subject one that sadly keeps getting more and more relevant with each passing day. It made the subject palatable to a wider ranger of people without becoming preachy. (Though I never really mind when that happens).
That all being said I am curious how much more in-depth and visceral Ahmed could have gotten if she had written this book for older teens or even adults. I realize the point was to make the story more accessible but I feel like maybe it just could have packed a bit more of a punch if it was set for just a slightly older audience but again that is all just more of a personal curiosity than a real critique.
My only really "problem" with this story was the underlying romance... I know I am always complaining about romances popping up in places they don't belong but in the case of this book it just sort of cheapens the whole story for me. I felt that the romance not only didn't fit but it was just added to appease people. The romance felt like an after though in some places and in others it undermined her whole purpose. If I have said this once I have said it a thousand times, stop adding in a romance to a book it has no business in! It may gain you a few readers but it cheapens the overall experience of your story. If it was not for that romance I would have given this book a 4.5 or even 4.7 stars.
All that being said I would recommend this book to anyone. This book is so timely and its something we all need to consider. This book really made me step back and wonder not only what I would do but what I can do now. Like I said in the beginning overall this book did exactly what it was meant to do. It made me stop and consider.

Terrible Narrator!
Revisado: 03-22-20
this book was super cute but the narration is aweful! Her voice was so flat and even spend up she was talking way to slow for a book like this! This book should have sounded just as light and fun and sexy as it is but this narrator managed to make it boring!

this book is not good at all. The narrator is awful and the writting is childish in nature. This book requires such a suspension of belief it might as well be labeled fantasy!

this was such a fun and unique book! I spend a long time looking for books with trans male main characters so finding this book was a great find. I really enjoyed this book and having the narrator be a trans man just made me even happier.
