Historia
Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book's content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

Unique view, world building
Revisado: 07-27-24
The fantasy aspects are taken as a given with little explication. There is a strongly feminist slant with an anti-patriarchy obsession(?).

In The Threat: How the FBI Protects America in the Age of Terror and Trump, Andrew G. McCabe offers a dramatic and candid account of his career and an impassioned defense of the FBI.

Terrific memoir of an agent
Revisado: 10-30-23
A generally even handed account by an FBI agent centered in the controversies of the trump administration but with ancillary descriptions of earlier career. Highly recommended.

Historia
Humanity listened to the night sky. What we heard shattered the world. Listen. Just once. That’s it. As soon as you hear it, it has you. And once it has you, it’s over. You may think you’re in control. You’re not. You want one more listen. You want to look at that strange spot in the sky. The one that’s been slowly growing. The one that didn’t make sense...until you listened. You want to listen again, and you will do whatever it takes to make everyone else listen. By any means necessary. Even if it kills you. Just one more listen. One more. Listen.

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

A twisted tale of murder in the world of big-stakes bass fishing tournaments. Filled with ex-wives, evangelists, and an armed pit-bull, this is a story that could only be concocted by Carl Hiaasen, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, New York Times best-selling author, and czar of Florida noir fiction.

Worth the read and an interesting look at social media. However, the effects of excessive use of twitter threads and gamer thread postings are massively worsened by spoken word performance which includes irritating repetitious hashtags and headings.

This classic deserves better
- De Matthew Salvo en 07-01-21
Great book. Too bad it's abridged.
Revisado: 08-09-22
This is a long complicated sci-fi classic that deserves to be read (heard?) in its entirety. Some important but not critical material has been deleted presumably to reduce the running time and production costs or maybe to more closely follow the movie. The original is better.

Historia
In 1949, eight years after the "Peace with Honor" was negotiated between Great Britain and Nazi Germany by the Farthing Set, England has completed its slide into fascist dicatorship. Then a bomb explodes in a London suburb. The brilliant but politically compromised Inspector Carmichael of Scotland Yard is assigned the case. What he finds leads him to a conspiracy of peers and communists, of staunch king-and-country patriots and hardened IRA gunmen, to murder Britain's prime minister and his new ally, Adolf Hitler.

Linear straight ahead tale of naive manchild of humble upbringing with special destiny and special powers. Fellowship on quest. Magic blades. Secret societies. Elves with elf/human and potential elf/godling miscegenation. Evil power with nefarious henchmen (henchpeople?). No trolls yet. All joined together by leaden prose.
