In The Signature of All Things, Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction, inserting her inimitable voice into an enthralling story of love, adventure and discovery. Spanning much of the 18th and 19th centuries, the novel follows the fortunes of the extraordinary Whittaker family as led by the enterprising Henry Whittaker - a poor-born Englishman who makes a great fortune in the South American quinine trade, eventually becoming the richest man in Philadelphia.

The story is just wonderfully detailed, unique, a truly beautiful book with a very interesting main character. I highly recommend.

Historia
Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

What’s the hype?
Revisado: 10-07-24
I did not find this book to be particularly interesting. Sure the characters were quirky, but how many books do I need to read with quirky characters. There were some interesting insights into the human condition. And the author was an interesting story, but while it felt like a unique storyline, it was not one that I needed to read. I finished the book, hoping there would be more at the end, but there wasn’t.

Entertaining Story

I was happy to spend a few hours in this story. The narrator was excellent and I loved getting to know the characters. Didn’t take too much thought but wasn’t silly.

Cheesy Cliché - Don’t bother
Revisado: 03-14-24
Every single cliche you can name for a riches to rags love story during a revolution…it’s in this lame book.
Who ARE you people giving this child-like writing five stars??? At best, you walk away with a few recipes. At worst, almost every female character has to contemplate being a prostitute as a last resort, and every love match goes EXACTLY as you can predict it will.
Don’t wait a moment on this silly, simple drivel unless you just want to feel good about yourself and how many predictions about the story you can get right. (Hint: you’ll guess EVERY SINGLE ONE CORRECTLY.)

Stunning Narration - gorgeous story
Revisado: 03-02-24
I loved This slow, dreamy novel. It was about a slice of time, and current times…I do think being almost the same age (late 40-60) as the narrator of the book is absolutely key.
So if you are younger- wait…and then enjoy it as I have, when you get to be my age.

Literally the WORST book I’ve ever finished.
Revisado: 07-21-23
How in the WORLD this book got close to five stars, I will never EVER understand. If you want a book full of sex, there are surely better ones out there…and as for suspense, I’m not sure if the ATROCIOUS narrators are what drove this weak story into the ground, but it was so lame. I actually thought the second narrator was AI generated. Not believable, no character was like-able and I couldn’t help but LOL halfway through it at the RIDICULOUS writing. The only reason I finished it was to see if maybe there was an ending that made it 5 stars?????? DON’T wasted your time or your money. What a joke.

Sam and Sadie—two college friends, often in love, but never lovers—become creative partners in a dazzling and intricately imagined world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. An All Time Top 5 for me
Revisado: 04-19-23
This was a beautifully, thoughtfully written story. I also went to college in Boston in the early 90s so that may be why I related to the setting and the historical elements so much. I loved the detailed characters and all their flaws. A wonderful book.
