A true Cozy!
Revisado: 03-12-24
This was the epitome of a Cozy Mystery. It was interesting, fun and there was a little restrained romance. I know that main character Clare Barclay is going to be a favorite! Loved the narrator's voice and pacing.

Historia
How much of our daily caloric intake comes from ingesting substances that, technically speaking, do not meet traditional definitions of “food”? Chances are, if you’re eating something that came wrapped in plastic and contains a funky ingredient you don’t have in your kitchen, it's most likely—almost definitely—ultra-processed food, or UPF.

Fascinating but NOT Preachy
Revisado: 01-17-24
The author reads his own material. He is engaging and humorous. Lots of facts and data to get through, but they are convincing and well researched. Loved the raw interviews at ends of some chapters. His take on UPFs is simple: be informed and make your own choices. This is NOT a diet book-- it's a science and business story. Excellent!

Historia
Defense lawyer Andy Carpenter usually tries to avoid taking on new cases at all costs. But this time, he's happy - eager, even - to take the case that's just come his way. Andy's long-time friend Martha "Pups" Boyer takes in stray puppies that the local dog rescue center can't handle, raises them until they're old enough to adopt, and then finds good homes for them. Not everyone admires the work Pups does as much as Andy does, however.

A few twists and turns close to the end. Like the narrator, you might figure out who is guilty, but can't prove it till the last few pages.

Love this narrator. A little snarky with a big heart and curiosity that doesn't end with the jury's verdict. Will definitely try another David Rosenfelt audio book.

So much fun to listen to RL Stine at his Spookiest. Great dramatized format. Brought me back to the 90s with my own boys reading Goosebumps, so I'll definitely be sending this along to the grandkids. Recommended for 9/10 and above...it might be a little too SPOOKY for younger kids.

Historia
Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

A great historical romance in the style of Downton Abbey. Set a generation before DA; if you enjoy a novel of manners and the ins and outs of social class and marrying for money, Trollope's novel definitely delivers.

China Bayles and Christmas, too!
Revisado: 01-16-15
Would you listen to Holly Blues again? Why?
Holly Blues was a great Christmas listen/read. It had just enough of the holiday to be festive and continued to investigate not only the murder but the relationships of the main characters as well.
What did you like best about this story?
The writing is sharp. As a westerner myself, I appreciate the idioms and ways of thinking about the land and the rights/responsibilities of others that Wittig expresses through China and McQuade.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
No. But I have to say that while the female narrator was good, the male narrator really nailed it. He sounded so West Texas that I could immediately picture him.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
This particular book is actually too small for a film. But, a movie about China Bayles and her life with McQuade would be wonderful.
Any additional comments?
I've read a couple of the China Bayles novels, but listening to them adds a new dimension.
