Historia
It is the last decade of the 19th century. The Wild West has been tamed and its fierce, independent and often violent larger-than-life figures – gun-toting wanderers, trappers, prospectors, Indian fighters, cowboys, and lawmen –are now victims of their own success. They are heroes who’ve outlived their usefulness.

Could have been better…
Revisado: 06-19-21
This would have been a better story if the 3 men who’s story the book follows all met up at the end in the big shootout of Soapy Smith. Instead, the stories barely intertwined! And there were so many crazier than fiction stories that happened in the Klondike, I don’t know why making up a fake Treadwell theft and vaguely connecting it to Carmack was necessary.
I only kept listening because I’m familiar with the places so it was entertaining, but if I didn’t know the area well, I would not have kept listening.

Historia
The Kingdom of Jerusalem, also known as Outremer, is the land far beyond the sea. Baptized in blood when the men of the First Crusade captured Jerusalem from the Saracens in the early 12th century, the kingdom defined an utterly new world, a land of blazing heat and a medley of cultures, a place where enemies were neighbors and neighbors became enemies. At the helm of this growing kingdom sits young Baldwin IV, an intelligent and courageous boy committed to the welfare and protection of his people.

Sad to finish this book
Revisado: 04-17-21
I loved this book as much as all of Penman’s books, however it was a bit hard to follow with so many people having similar/the same names and just SO MANY characters. But none of that is the author’s fault.

Historia
In 1899, railroad magnate Edward H. Harriman organized a most unusual summer voyage to the wilds of Alaska: He converted a steamship into a luxury "floating university", populated by some of America's best and brightest scientists and writers, including the anti-capitalist eco-prophet, John Muir. Armed with Dramamine and an industrial-strength mosquito net, Mark Adams sets out to retrace the 1899 expedition. Using the state's intricate public ferry system, the Alaska Marine Highway System, Adams travels 3,000 miles.

Alaska with humor and realism
Revisado: 02-26-21
Adams did a great job narrating his book. I’m always skeptical of authors not from Alaska trying to present a version of it, but Adams really did his research, and presented an impressively realistic version of Alaska with humor, while impressing upon the reader the issues Alaska faces with climate change. I love that Adams didn’t downplay the decrepit look of places and strange characters. He got those spot on. But also showed despite the bizarreness, Alaskans know how to live in and around nature and survive, despite whatever the elected leaders are doing.

Historia
Over the years the American writer Emma Larkin has spent traveling in Burma, she has come to know all too well the many ways this police state can be described as "Orwellian". The life of the mind exists in a state of siege in Burma, and it long has. The connection between George Orwell and Burma is not simply metaphorical, of course; Orwell's mother was born in Burma, and he was shaped by his experiences there as a young man working for the British Imperial Police.

Historia
On the morning of April 29, 1986, a fire alarm sounded in the Los Angeles Public Library. As the moments passed, the patrons and staff who had cleared out of the building realized this was not the usual false alarm. As one fireman recounted later, “Once that first stack got going, it was good-bye, Charlie.” The fire was disastrous: It reached 2,000 degrees and burned for more than seven hours. By the time it was extinguished, it had consumed 400,000 books and damaged 700,000 more.

Review by an ex librarian
Revisado: 02-07-19
This book had a lot of interesting facts. I would have organized the book more chronologically. The jumping around annoyed me.
I found the history of the head librarians interesting.
As a librarian, I was a bit bored by the parts about internal workings of the library.
I think the author should have mentioned her personal connection to libraries at the beginning but not 2-3 more times after that.

Historia
Published in 1945, Cannery Row focuses on the acceptance of life as it is: both the exuberance of community and the loneliness of the individual. Drawing on his memories of the real inhabitants of Monterey, California, Steinbeck interweaves the stories of Doc, Henri, Mack and his boys, and the other characters in this world where only the fittest survive, to create a novel that is at once one of his most humorous and most poignant works.

Humorous and horrifying
Revisado: 02-23-18
At age 30 this book inspired me to travel and yet is making me question life as unwed and childless as of yet. The book is funny, not for a young audience, and hearing it from the author made it much better than reading it to myself.

Thomas Cromwell has long been reviled as a Machiavellian schemer who stopped at nothing in his quest for power. As Henry VIII's right-hand man, Cromwell was the architect of the English Reformation, secured Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon and plotted the downfall of Anne Boleyn, and upon his arrest, was accused of trying to usurp the King himself. But here Tracy Borman reveals a different side of one of the most notorious figures in history.

Not for the car
Revisado: 01-10-18
I listened to this while driving and I had a hard time following all the intricate intrigue details and all the players when half my brain was distracted driving. I think it also might have been better in print so I could go back and reference who people were. Otherwise great book and good narrator.
