I suffered through a few minutes of the text. The author seems to say he has special knowledge of the Indian, presumedly because he is one. He seems to dislike scholarship about Indians. But he speaks about the deep spiritual sense of the Indian without making any distinction among tribes, their specific views about their particular spirit-Gods or their specific worship habits. I was obviously hoping for a very different approach

A strong combination of well documented basic research and animal models, correlational human research, and extensive clinical experience concerning the gut and brain connection. The last part proposes reasonable life style interventions to promote optimal human health.

As an old white man, I found this to be a fascinating and well researched challenge to the old white male perspective on sex roles in evolution. I see the world in a more enriched way.

Fascinating story of a brilliant, engaging but arrogant scientist. Compellingly written. Details the culture of the time and the eternal conflict between faith (as understood at the time) and reason. Recommend this book highly.

Big Disappointment

I am a big consumer of scientific books for the scientificly minded. The best of these books tells a story or more often multiple stories. Who discovered what and how that discovery was used by the next researcher as a basis of the next discovery. It's about people involved in the discovery of science findings and facts.

This book is a concise compendium of facts. Very dry. It is curious that a psychiatrist gives no hint of his amazement and awe of the facts he presents.

The topic itself is fascinating but my fascination was totally thwarted by the presentation.

introduced me to literally a whole new world below the surface of the sea and the extraordinary human capacities that are little discussed in physiology. For example, one free diver survived with a heart rate of something like 7 beats per minute. Well written and captivating
