Aidan Montgomery was born a witch. He was born with the rarest form of witchcraft, a fact he keeps hidden to protect himself. As an anchor witch he couldn’t feel more disconnected from his abilities if he tried. His power feels opposite to who he is. How can he anchor the world if he can’t even anchor himself?

I love the worlds this author creates.
Revisado: 01-01-25
I always find the characters by LJ Black to be likable – characters that I want to see succeed. I also like the way that Black brings together science and magic, creating a reliable universe within which the characters live.
As with the previous book that I listened to, I wished for just a little bit more foundation on which some of the challenges within the plot were based. That said, because I listened to this book rather than reading it, and kept getting interrupted, that could entirely be “operator error!” 😆
During the introduction, I was worried that I wasn’t going to get into the sound of the narrator, but either my ear became attuned to her cadence, or she relaxed into the narration, such that I found her interpretation to be very enjoyable.

A good read!
Revisado: 07-19-24
I enjoyed the pace of this story, with its personable characters, and interesting mystery. The genetic aspect was particularly intriguing, and the descriptions of food and meals were so appealing that I want to find the diner that appeared from time to time!
Perhaps because my first reading in this series is not the first book of the series, I wished for a bit more back story: more info about the different creatures, as well as the history of their relationship with humans.
The narration was fine, and moved the story forward. That said, I wanted to feel that the narrator was telling me a story, rather than reading me a story.
If you enjoy the fantasy genre, good mysteries, and engaging characters, you’ll enjoy Plague of the Lost Ones.

Surprisingly enjoyable. A page turner!
Revisado: 05-28-23
I listen to Audible books primarily in my car, and I’m sure my neighbors wondered why I’d hang out in my driveway after returning home! This audiobook was nearly impossible to put down. So often when politicians or other celebrities write or co-write novels they are thinly plotted, and ploddingly written. That is definitely not the case here! Well-plotted and paced, with spot on narration, State of Terror is a great read. I’m hoping for a sequel!

A Great Listen!
Revisado: 03-23-23
A fun mystery with great characters. I enjoyed the character development, and the author’s light touch with heavy subjects.
At first the narrator’s accent was challenging to my American ears, used to flatter vowels. As I got into the story and became more comfortable with the narration, though, I really appreciated her nuance.

Historia
The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every kind of animal, including humans, is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of our immense world. In An Immense World, Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us.

Science and story, beautifully read!
Revisado: 08-07-22
Ed Yong brings together science and storytelling in a way that’s illuminating, educational, and accessible. He provides just enough description of sensory structures and chemistry to help the reader to visualize the mechanism behind the animals’ perceptions, without so much that reading or listening to this book would be daunting. His writing has an air of storytelling about it that invites the reader in.
Yong’s narration of the audiobook adds another layer of enjoyment for me. Unlike some authors who are so in love with the words they’ve chosen that their own narration can be overwhelmingly precious, Yong simply lends his voice to the story he has to tell.
Finally, although the book would be fabulous without this, I do appreciate an author on a scientific subject who can quote the “Insane Clown Posse“ to good effect!

Having entertained the idea for years, and even offered a few questionable opportunities ("It's a piece of cake! Just do four hours of interviews, find someone else to write it, put your face on the cover, and voila!") I have decided to tell these stories just as I have always done, in my own voice.

This is my third Victoria Schade audiobook, and it does not disappoint! As with all her books the characters are engaging, human and canine alike. The behind-the-scenes peek at working with dogs on a TV set adds to the interest, and the romance is sweet and satisfying.
