Historia
One minute, down-and-out actor Lorenzo Smythe is, as usual, in a bar, drinking away his troubles while watching his career circle the drain. Then a space pilot buys him a drink, and the next thing Smythe knows, he’s shanghaied to Mars. Smythe suddenly finds himself agreeing to the most difficult role of his career: impersonating an important politician who has been kidnapped. Peace with the Martians is at stake, and failure to pull off the act could result in interplanetary war.

Terrible, terrible narrator
Revisado: 08-12-22
This is an old favorite, I confess. So I do have preconceptions about the characters. The book itself has some problematic aspects. I anticipated enjoying this ... but the reader is _intolerable_.
It is possible that Pinchot is attempting a satire. If so, I have completely missed the joke. His characterizations are thin, trite, and contradicted by the plain text.
Dak Broadbent _always_ sounds sarcastic. Smythe not only sounds supercilious (which could be a defensible choice) but _stupid_. Pinchot has him putting the emphasis on terms that Smythe would have found commonplace, making Smythe sound ridiculous. The accent Pinchot uses for Bonaforte is not home-spun, but a drawl with no particular provenance. The deal-breaker, though, was Penny, whom Pinchot has chosen to voice like a cheap and incompetent phone sex worker.
So I'm out of here. I will not finish. I will take down my ancient paperback and read the rest.

Historia
It's Dissolution Summer, and as the United Kingdom prepares to break up into separate nations, the Counterculturals have gathered for a festival where everything's allowed. Among them is a talented little brat called Fiorinda, rock and roll princess by birth, searching for her father, the legendary Rufus O'Niall. Instead, she finds Ax Preston, the softly spoken guitarman with bizarre delusions about saving the country from the dark ages. Together with Sage Pender, techno-wizard king of the lads, they join the pop-icon team that's supposed to make the government look cool.

There is literally nothing quite like this book, which is strange and magical and difficult and glorious. It will not go where you expect it to go. It will give you things you didn't know you needed.

Historia
Tamsyn Muir’s Gideon the Ninth unveils a solar system of swordplay, cut-throat politics, and lesbian necromancers. Her characters leap out of the audio, as skillfully animated as arcane revenants. The result is a heart-pounding epic science fantasy. Brought up by unfriendly, ossifying nuns, ancient retainers, and countless skeletons, Gideon is ready to abandon a life of servitude and an afterlife as a reanimated corpse.

Ghastly, glorious, grand
Revisado: 02-06-22
This is an absolute, balls-to-the-walls, what the fuck do you mean "skeletons don't wear sunglasses“ gothic romance with vast quantities of bones and viscera, but no sex. (I have hopes for the sequels.) It is complex and nuanced in a profane, funny, in your face style. It is clearly fanfic inflected, and has no sense of propriety, but a keen wit and innovative use of tropes. The narrator is utterly brilliant, as well.

An Old Favorite, with emphasis on "old"
Revisado: 02-07-21
I have been fond of this book for 50 years. It is a sweet, funny romance. It has a fair bit of casual sexism, not a surprise given when it was written. The reader was more maudlin than the text required, alas. Nevertheless it was nice to visit an old friend.

Historia
Halmey Dz and her partner, Connla Kurucz, are salvage operators, living just on the inside of the law...usually. Theirs is the perilous and marginal existence - with barely enough chance of striking it fantastically big - just once - to keep them coming back for more. They pilot their tiny ship into the scars left by unsuccessful White Transitions, searching for the relics of lost human and alien vessels. But when they make a shocking discovery about an alien species that has been long thought dead, it may tip the perilous peace mankind has found into full-out war.

Space pirates, a meditation on identity, and complex moral quandries against a backdrop of strange beauty. Really good reader as well.

Lovely
Revisado: 10-19-18
I am always surprised at how very Victorian this novel is, delightful and sardonic, and replete with long, sentimental passages. The reader did not read the lengthy sub-titles to each chapter. I do not miss them, but if you would, then this is not the performance you want. The full prejudices of the age are on display, but somehow don't seem malicious. If unthinking racist, classist, and sexist attitudes would destroy your enjoyment, then this book won't be fun for you.
