Another fantastic book by Brittany Cavallaro!
This is an author who has a talent for taking well known and beloved stories and placing them in a modern day teenaged life.
Emotional, detailed and fast paced! She captured the social intricacies of child abuse and the cycle of poverty with a bit of whimsy and fantasy that many survivors have had.
Julia Whelan always does a superb job of narrating novels, building suspense and gets into character in a way that brings every character to life.

Historia
When Philip Digby first shows up on her doorstep, Zoe Webster is not impressed. He's rude and he treats her like a book he's already read and knows the ending to. But before she knows it, Digby - annoying, brilliant, and somehow...attractive? Digby - has dragged her into a series of hilarious and dangerous situations all related to an investigation into the kidnapping of a local teenage girl. A kidnapping that may be connected to the tragic disappearance of his own sister eight years ago.

Good story, author needs better dialogue words
Revisado: 06-07-18
The story really is a cross between Sherlock Holmes and Veronica Mars. The story is great and several funny scenes.
However, every dialogue words are entirely “said”. I'd like to count the number of times the word “said” is used in the book. “He said, I said, Digby said, Henry said, Sloan said she said”. It’s awful and almost made the story unlistenable. I really hope the author's editors address this in future books. It's not difficult to use words like “asked” “mumbled” “responded” “insisted” “agreed” ... a thousand other words could have been used besides “said”. This is elementary school basics of story writing.

Great book, needs a better narrator
Revisado: 12-16-17
What did you love best about Harry, a History?
A great book chronicling the rise of the Harry Potter fandom. It brough back memories of what it was like anticipating the next book with behind the scenes tid bits from the Leaky Cauldron.
Any additional comments?
The narrator was hard to listen to. The feigned emotion was over the top.

Excellent concept
Revisado: 02-15-17
Would you consider the audio edition of A Study in Charlotte to be better than the print version?
Yes. The performance by Graham Halstead brought Jamie to life.
What other book might you compare A Study in Charlotte to and why?
I don't think I have read another book I would compare this too. The concept of the future Holmes/Watson generations is a unique one.
What about Graham Halstead and Julia Whelan ’s performance did you like?
Graham Halstead's performance was excellent as Jamie in narration. His unique voices for each character made the story feel like a clear reconnection of Jamie's. I fully enjoyed his performance. Julia Whelan captured Charlotte's cool and detached personality.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes. The first time I listened to this book, I hated having to press pause to get back to the real world. I have since listened to the book several times, many in one sitting. The story is fast paced and exciting. Each chapter left me wanting to know what would happen next. Some plot points required re-listening to fully understand what happened. It is a story I enjoy re-listening to.
Any additional comments?
The concept of a future Holmes/Watson generation is a unique one. Every modern adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes stories has placed the original pair in modern day. This take of what Sherlock and John's descendants' lives might be like was intriguing and exciting.

Historia
Jamie and Charlotte are looking for a winter break reprieve in Sussex after a fall semester that almost got them killed. But nothing about their time off is proving simple, including Holmes and Watson's growing feelings for each other. When Charlotte's beloved uncle Leander goes missing from the Holmes estate - after being oddly private about his latest assignment in a German art forgery ring - the game is afoot once again, and Charlotte throws herself into a search for answers.

Disappointing
Revisado: 02-15-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoy all things Sherlock Holmes. I loved the first book in this series, but this book did not capture my attention. The plot was weak and the creativity and brilliant allusions from the first book did not carry through to this book.
Would you be willing to try another book from Brittany Cavallaro? Why or why not?
Yes. While this book was disappointing, I do like the concept of the future Holmes/Watson generation.
What about Graham Halstead and Julia Whelan ’s performance did you like?
The vocal performance was excellent. Consistent voices and accents, a smooth comfortable voice. Graham Halstead gives unique voices for every character and his narration from Jamie's perspective is fantastic. Julia Whelan captures Charlotte's cold and detached personality perfectly.
Do you think The Last of August needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes. There is so much room for character development and exploration. The Holmes/Watson relationship could be explored in many ways.
Any additional comments?
I was very excited for this book to come out. I watched online for the release date, downloaded the audiobook as soon as it was available and listened to it in one day. I debated buying the actual book, but by half way through the audiobook, I decided against it. I was excited to see what the author would do with the characters relationship, adventures and interactions within the modern world. Instead I found the book focused almost entirely on teenaged relationship and sexual frustration and did not develop the relationships or characters very well.
