Good Space Opera Fun
Revisado: 05-01-24
It very much reminded me of classic Space Opera, like the Lensmen. A little bit Mary Sue but not really, just a fun Romp coming of age story.

Fun story
Revisado: 02-09-23
Really a fun story, but it needed some editing. I had to push hard to get through the first few chapters, they were largely irrelevant info dumps. For example, if they are not getting into or going th o use a fighter in the next chapter, I don't need to be informed of its weapon attack angles. ugggh. otherwise it was a fun Story. Obviously a lot of wish fulfillment.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

. C. “Scar” Gordon was on the French Riviera recovering from a tour of combat in Southeast Asia, but he hadn’t given up his habit of scanning the personals in the newspaper. One ad in particular leapt out at him: "Are you a coward? This is not for you. We badly need a brave man. He must be 23 to 25 years old, in perfect health, at least six feet tall, weigh about 190 pounds, fluent English with some French, proficient with all weapons, some knowledge of engineering and mathematics essential...."

I loved this story since i was young. but the narrator killed the experience. male voices are big and loud, females are all super quiet and timid. to the point that changing volume was necessary to continue listening. Super annoying.

Historia
The father of the intelligent design movement, Phillip E. Johnson, thinks the new atheists are right! How? They’ve put serious discussion about God back on the public agenda. Despite their conclusions, folks like Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris, and Daniel Dennett are asking the right questions. They’re making belief in any religion an issue again, especially in the university context where, for decades, questions about faith and reason have been taken off the table for serious discussion. Open debate is exactly what we need on the topics of God, evolution, and creation.

Historia
> The Paradox of Jamestown discusses the circumstances surrounding English colonization of Virginia and the evolution of slavery in that colony. Beginning with an examination of 16th- and 17th-century life in England, the authors explain many of the reasons - social, political, religious, and economic - people chose to leave the Old World for a new life in the Americas. They describe the early interactions between the settlers and the Indians, the difficulties those groups had in establishing cooperative relationships, and the many difficulties the settlers had in adjusting to life in the New World.

I stopped listening when the author was describing America as Primarily English, and then says But we must remember the contributions of the blacks and Jews to sports and entertainment. The Italians and Irish building our cities.

Mankind has lorded over the land of Illian for a thousand years, building on the ruins left by the elves, as if it were their birthright. A thousand years is a long time for an immortal race to see the truth of things, a truth that has remained unsaid for a millennium - elves are superior. They are faster, stronger, and connected to the magical realm in a way that man could never grasp. Illian should belong to them.

Good story in need of an Editor
Revisado: 10-14-21
I lost interest in most of the cardboard characters in the first few hours. They are all archetypes cribbed from Tolkien.
Most irritating was the repeated, build to a climax and... cut away to an entirely different area and scene. Over and over to the point where all tension was lost and cohesion followed shortly thereafter

Finally Good HEMA!
Revisado: 05-11-20
This book has a Great plot, with twists, interesting characters, and great world building. Set in Italy just post renaissance with a wonderfully history based world in which magic works. Great fantasy story with a good world building and interesting characters, but that is not all.
The Author did the SWORDFIGHTS RIGHT! If you study Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) This is a nuisance that you just have to get used to in fantasy novels. 15 pound swords, cleaving people in twain. just not a thing in real life. Vague sword swooshed and he defeated 13 people, descriptions. Like the sword play in boring and we want to move on. This one is done right. You can actually picture the positions of the swords and how they respond and counter.
Ordering the other two book in the series and I am definitely going to read the rest of this authors work.

Now updated with newly discovered recipes and historical information, this updated edition includes the origins of the first American drink, the mint julep (which Wondrich places before the American Revolution) and those of the cocktail itself. It also provides more detail about 19th-century spirits, many new and colorful anecdotes and details about Thomas' life, and a number of particularly notable, delicious, and influential cocktails not covered in the original edition.

Interesting history, but needs recipies
Revisado: 03-02-20
Yes, I know that the recipes are available as a PDF, at least give me a quick run down of each one in the audio. It would not take long to say, "a shot of whiskey, a few dashes of bitters, and 1/4 ounce of absinthe, over ice." then when you are describing the wonderful history of a drink that someone made at a wonderfully historic bar and served to famous people, we have some idea of what it is. Stopping and having to reference a pdf in a different program turns what was a light interesting listen into a homework assignment that I get to drink (which is the best kind of homework, but still homework)
