Too much backstory
Revisado: 10-11-13
This book could have been two separate novels. I lost interest in the main story after hours of nonstop backstory, which could have been a novel on its own.

worthless
Revisado: 10-05-13
This book contains little usable advice about writing. The author seems angry and spends too much time ranting and degrading those that don't agree with her.

laughably bad narration
Revisado: 03-03-12
I can't believe a publisher would allow something as bad as this to be released. I've heard computer-generated voice that sounded better than this. I struggled to get through the introduction. Wasted credit.

Historia
Jeannette Walls grew up with parents whose ideals and stubborn nonconformity were both their curse and their salvation. Rex and Rose Mary Walls had four children. In the beginning, they lived like nomads, moving among Southwest desert towns, camping in the mountains. Rex was a charismatic, brilliant man who, when sober, captured his children's imagination. Rose Mary painted and wrote and couldn't stand the responsibility of providing for her family; she called herself an "excitement addict."

Truth truly is stranger than fiction

It's refreshing to find a book that contains no underlying political message. It takes a lot of courage to write such a book.

Historia
Charles Frazier puts his remarkable gifts in the service of a lean, taut narrative while losing none of the transcendent prose, virtuosic storytelling, and insight into human nature that have made him one of the most beloved and celebrated authors in the world. Now, with his brilliant portrait of Luce, a young woman who inherits her murdered sister’s troubled twins, Frazier has created his most memorable heroine. Before the children, Luce was content with the reimbursements of the rich Appalachian landscape....

Great characters, plot and setting. Wouldn't be surprised if this novel makes it to the "silver screen" very soon.

Double bad

I can tolerate a bad narration when the author has something useful to say, but this audio book failed on both accounts.

Historia
On an entirely normal, beautiful fall day in Chester's Mill, Maine, the town is inexplicably and suddenly sealed off from the rest of the world by an invisible force field. Planes crash into it and fall from the sky in flaming wreckage, a gardener's hand is severed as "the dome" comes down on it, people running errands in the neighboring town are divided from their families, and cars explode on impact. No one can fathom what this barrier is, where it came from, and when - or if - it will go away.

could the well be running dry?
Revisado: 06-18-10
If this book is a model of what the author writes in the future, it will be my last. Laced with almost pornographic language, I had to turn the volume down when someone walked within hearing distance. I made it through the 3rd volume and finally deleted it from my player. Even without the bad language, it reads like it was written by someone who is paid by the word.
