I can't take this narration
Revisado: 01-30-24
I cannot take the overwrought narrator for the Lyria character. Waaaaaaaay too much. The 3 previous books were perfectly narrated - why oh why was this done. Unlistenable with 19 hours left to go - no way. <wailing>

Narration elevates a sometimes tiresome plot and unlikable characters
Revisado: 11-18-23
Very entertaining in a sick sort of way. Nathan Hill is a very good writer - which is why I was utterly stopped in my tracks shocked when, near the end of the story, he actually used the phrase "I released a breath I didn't know I was holding" . . . I groaned out loud on the sidewalk. Hill sometimes beats the hell out of a point or position, holds the reader's hand a little too much. But, even so, I would recommend this book. It's a good story, well told, and the narration definitely elevates at least a full star. I appreciated the ending.

Historia
The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words); his wife, Beverley, a celebrated novelist; and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant.

Seasick
Revisado: 10-27-23
Definitely a masterpiece. Beautiful writing. I would credit Tolstoy for remaining very strictly dedicated to his story and characters. He made no compromises for his characters, pace, setting. For so many words and characters, none are wasted or unflushed. It requires equal dedication and patience from the reader.
In terms of the translation and choices in narration, I cannot fully endorse the choices. Not that it is necessarily poorly narrated but the style, at times too "lilty" and wistful, made me a bit seasick. My other complaint is the jarring French conversation. It was, in my opinion, the worst part of the narration.
Overall, I appreciated the very subtle approach towards the character voices. I prefer this to over-acting the characters, which I find intrusive. So for that, it was well done.
Definitely enjoyed this classic. I will miss the story - but not Anna Karenina. . . she is horrible.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Nice easy listen
Revisado: 04-19-23
Not bad for an easy listen. I am not a fan of this narrator. Her male characters all sound like "duuuuuudes" and in this case the 30-somethings sound like teenagers. Same style that annoyed me in Beartown - didn't realize, or I might've passed on this title. Got through it anyway. Can't say the story will stick with me, or that I would recommend it to anyone, but it was sweet.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

She actually licked her lips

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Another WWII Story, Another Bookshop Story
Revisado: 07-02-21
A very light and easy read. Doesn't stand out in the saturated WWII market, but I managed to care enough to finish it. It felt a little uneven, with spots that could have been more developed. The moaning over the children being sent into the country was irritating and didn't factor into the story significantly enough to warrant multiple revisiting by the main character, who didn't have children or siblings. But, it was a pleasant enough story. Some of the tension was well done. I cared about the characters, and I finished it, so 3 stars. The narrator did a fine job, distinguished between characters without overdoing it - 4 stars. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone except as a light pleasant quick read.

There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything.

Narrator and story equally bad
Revisado: 02-21-21
I can't decide which is more annoying - this narrator's fried voice and horrible character affectation, or the go-nowhere/mean-nothing story with the unrealistically idiotic characters. There is no let up from the stupid. If I had realized this was the same narrator as Beartown, I never would have purchased this title. I was ready for something light, but this was too full of frustratingly stupid people to be any fun at all.

Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met. After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art. Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He'll only ever be there when she's at the office. In fact, they'll never even have to meet.

Story is okay for light reading - but...
Revisado: 12-31-20
It's an okay enough light read but I cannot stand the phone conversation tin can effect - very annoying. Sound effects in general are a poor and distracting choice for audiobooks. So, average story somewhat ruined by bad production. Narrator's are okay, also nothing amazing. Solid 3, something to entertain when not in the mood for complex or heavy or action or violence.
