Just ok
Revisado: 11-21-21
Interesting premise but I didn’t find many of the characters very likable so it was hard to get invested. The narrator, while talented, varied his volume to such a great degree that sometimes I would have to turn the sound way up to hear him, then his voice would suddenly be super loud and I’d scramble to turn it down. That was irritating.

Historia
Returning to the territory he so brilliantly explored in his masterful New York Times best seller American Gods, the incomparable Neil Gaiman offers up a work of dazzling ingenuity, a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth that is at once startling, terrifying, exhilarating, and fiercely funny, a true wonder of a novel that confirms Stephen King's glowing assessment of the author as "a treasure house of story, and we are lucky to have him."

Fantastic narrator, enjoyable story
Revisado: 02-18-20
First - Lenny Henry is, I think, the best narrator I have heard on Audible. Seriously skilled: he manages to effectively perform many voices extremely well, even the female parts.
I decided to get this title because I love Neil Gaiman but after reading reviews was not 100% sure I would enjoy American Gods. This is a similar story but smaller in scope so I thought I would try it first. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am heading off to buy American Gods next.
Gaiman doesn’t disappoint with this story - as usual his writing contains good character development, an interesting premise, and humor. A fun read!

Historia
One night in an isolated college town in the hills of Southern California, a first-year student stumbles into her dorm room, falls asleep - and doesn't wake up. She sleeps through the morning, into the evening. Her roommate, Mei, cannot rouse her. Neither can the paramedics, nor the perplexed doctors at the hospital. When a second girl falls asleep, and then a third, Mei finds herself thrust together with an eccentric classmate as panic takes hold of the college and spreads to the town.

Boring
Revisado: 12-02-19
I’m an avid reader who appreciates those novels with slow layerings of plot and characterization; I do not need a fast plot or flashy characters in order to find a book satisfying. With that being said, this was one of the most boring books I have ever heard/read. The premise is really interesting but nothing ever happens in terms of a story arc. Many characters’ points of view are established and...yawn. Despite a great deal of time spent on them, I never came to care about any of the characters. At all.
I stubbornly refused to give up because I kept thinking that surely, something would happen - but it didn’t. It was a relief when it ended.
The narrator did a terrific job, however, especially considering what she had to work with.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Astounding memoir
Revisado: 11-14-18
This book was incredibly good. I was quickly drawn into Tara’s world; it was heartbreaking and fascinating. You will root for her the entire time - for her to survive and then to escape the abuse and madness of her family, a family that is also filled with humor and love. I think it is that juxtaposition that makes it such a compelling read. This is not depressing, as I’d initially thought it might be. I highly recommend it. The combination of excellent storytelling and outstanding narration makes a highly satisfying read.

Meet Ove. He's a curmudgeon - the kind of man who points at people he dislikes as if they were burglars caught outside his bedroom window. He has staunch principles, strict routines, and a short fuse. People call him "the bitter neighbor from hell". But behind the cranky exterior there is a story and a sadness.

All the good things: story, characters, narrator
Revisado: 10-27-18
This is now one of my all-time favorite books. The story is simple, nuanced, interesting, hilarious, and beautiful. The main character is an irredeemable curmudgeon and his thoughts, words, and actions were delightful. I chuckled frequently and laughed aloud a few times; this book is imprinted on my heart. The narrator is spot on - he understands Ove and his intonation and delivery are part of what makes the book so amusing. Just read it. You won’t regret it. It is simply wonderful.

Engrossing urban fantasy
Revisado: 09-26-18
I can’t say enough about the quality of the story and the narrator. I’m wary of authors who read their own works, but Neil Gaiman is wonderful! He is an actor as well as an author. I was completely drawn in to the world he created, and it was fun to see parts of London that I have visited/lived in through the lens of his parallel world. I was sad when it was nearing the end because I did t want the story to end! Wonderful novel!

Interesting premise, but ultimately unsatisfying
Revisado: 07-13-18
I was intrigued by the premise of this novel; it was interesting, a fairy tale for adults. I wanted to like it but the plot ran for so long without much happening, and when the climax finally came it, like the resolution, was a rather disappointing. It’s as if the author spent so much time and effort crafting many plot events but then didn’t quite know how to finish it.

Interesting story, poor narration
Revisado: 03-24-18
I haven’t read any Alice Hoffman books before, and I really enjoyed the world she created in The Rules of Magic. The narration, however, was irritating and got in the way of the storyline. The narrator’s frequent changes in volume were not only distracting - it also caused me to have to rewind the book constantly because she would be very loud one moment and whispering the next. The narrator seems like she could be really good and has potential, but it was also jarring to hear characters from the East Coast speaking in a southern Californian accent, complete with vocal fry.

Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.

A Compelling Fairy Tale for Grown Ups
Revisado: 01-31-18
I absolutely loved this book - the writing, the performance - everything! The characters were complex and the storyline was innovative and surprising. The story is woven together through various characters and time frames, creating an intricate and satisfying world. I was expecting young adult fiction (which I also enjoy) but this novel is so much more. It felt like a fairy tale, but one with complexity and nuance - a fairy tale for the grown ups.

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

Fascinating and funny
Revisado: 01-19-18
Obviously, this book was funny; Trevor Noah wrote it! What made it an amazing read was how he skillfully described his life experiences while simultaneously revealing the horrors of apartheid. Listening to his stories created a nuanced, multilayered view of a racist state. You can’t fully understand the irrationality and cruelty of that system by reading one story - you have to read to all of them to get an understanding of it. His delivery is terrific; as good as his writing is, I felt that listening to Trever Noah reading his memoir made the stories more vivid. I laughed and learned a lot at the same time. Can’t recommend this book enough!
