I found the story interesting. I like Harper she has a refreshing perspective on life and doesn’t let difficult things weigh her down. She’s both feisty and carefree. I don’t really get Knox. I think the author may have tried to give him too many facets to his personality which seemed conflicting at times.

I know a few other people mentioned the narrator. She wasn’t great but she didn’t bother me that much. I will agree that based on the content of the story she may not have been the best choice. After reading the reviews I did change the narration speed to 1.2 to avoid any drawn out pauses so I think that may have helped.

My biggest complaint and what ultimately stopped me from starting book 2 is their relationship in bed. Knox’s was so obsessed with controlling her in bed. I think he only wanted her bc she could hold off on her orgasm until he gave her permission to have it. He mentions it’s ALL the time and somehow during the MANY sex scenes she is always a “good girl” and does as told.

She complains and says “no” and “stop” but does what he wants or “it will be worse” for her. With her whiny voice and the context it feels like a predator ‘training’ her. Basically every sex scene is the same and they are all her being completely 100% submissive and learning what to say and do so he’ll be happy/she can be allowed to get off.

Towards the end, I found myself skipping over the sex scenes and they are at least 1/3 of the book. The story wasn’t interesting enough to overcome this so I won’t be continuing with the series.

I made it through the first book and part of the second book before I gave up. I really like the premise and the story line had promise but it reads more like what a teens idea of what a romance novel would sound like versus what a good one is. The plot both felt not really developed and like way too many ideas were crammed into it. For me, a sign that it’s probably not a good book is when the main characters have to continually explain to you (the reader not a character in the story) their back story over and over, and over again but if that’s not something you mind then you may enjoy this book. I will also say the narration was good otherwise I probably would have given up on it sooner.

I just don’t understand how people could compare this to the Iron Druid or Harry Dresden series (which I love btw). I tried so hard to listen to this but I couldn’t get into it. I found a lot of the descriptions very strange/unnecessary. For example there was one scene where the main character was saying that to a guy like him a bikini is fashionable not slutty (ie l’m a guys, guys, half naked women are great) but then in another moment he was describing her expensive Louboutin shoes. I just couldn’t understand or get a sense for the character’s personality and from sentence to sentence it didn’t seem like the same person would describe something the way it was described. Add to that his never ending droning on about his dead girlfriend. We get it, it was life changing and sad but hearing his journal entries ever chapters added no value at all to the storyline and to reference every date with AJ as in after Jessie was just bizarre. I am a person who likes terrible cliché books and I just couldn’t make it past a few chapters of this. I normally will power through and hope book 2 is better but I had to return this one.

I absolutely love the author’s other series Throne of Glass, it’s one of my favorites. I could not understand why people liked this series. It was so slow and boring but when you get about 3/4 of the way through it starts to get interesting. The second book is just better/much more interesting. You see the characters start to have depth vs being one note/flat. It’s what I expected for Sarah J. Maas. I’d recommend starting A Court of Thorns and Roses off at ~chapter 21. You can pick up what you need at that point and save yourself a few hours of fodder that just distract from the momentum of the overall series,
