Historia
Beverly Underwood and her arch enemy, Lula Dean, live in the tiny town of Troy, Georgia, where they were born and raised. Now Beverly is on the school board, and Lula has become a local celebrity by embarking on mission to rid the public libraries of all inappropriate books—none of which she’s actually read. To replace the “pornographic” books she’s challenged at the local public library, Lula starts her own lending library in front of her home: a cute wooden hutch with glass doors and neat rows of the worthy literature that she’s sure the town’s readers need.

The use of great books to advance the story gracefully.
Revisado: 11-27-24
I needed this clear upbeat story ripped from today’s headlines. Listened, laughed, teared up, hoped for a moment.
I had just written an update for a reunion report quoting Anne Frank…coincidence?…serendipity? Threads coming together as Fate weaves?

Historia
Will Johnnie Veal—convicted of the murder of two police officers in 1970—be granted parole after 50 years in prison? How can he convince the parole board he’s reformed when he insists he’s innocent? What is prison time even supposed to accomplish? These are the questions that propel The Parole Room forward as it builds toward Johnnie’s 20th parole hearing—after 19 rejections.

Brief and excellent look into the correction system from the viewpoint of parole. The comments that we can’t afford to continue the wild swings between leniency and mass incarceration are on the mark. Someday we’ll probably improve things, but not sure when or how.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

Revisado: 06-22-24
If everyone could work doing what they loved to do what a world we would live in. If that work was in service to others it would be even more amazing.
The people who express hate for Tony Fauci should listen/read this book. I know it is not likely, but just imagine if they walked in his moccasins for even half of this book.
I forgot the parts about Ebola and Zika. Nice review of influenza scares from the 1970-90s.

Historia
They destroy plant diseases. They break down toxins. They plough the earth. They transform forests. They’ve survived two mass extinctions, including the one that wiped out the dinosaur. Not bad for a creature that’s deaf, blind, and spineless. Who knew that earthworms were one of our planet’s most important caretakers? Or that Charles Darwin devoted his last years to studying their remarkable achievements?

Historia
Although Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, he’s been steadily losing weight. There are a couple of other odd things, too. He weighs the same in his clothes and out of them, no matter how heavy they are. Scott doesn’t want to be poked and prodded. He mostly just wants someone else to know, and he trusts Doctor Bob Ellis. In the small town of Castle Rock, the setting of many of King’s most iconic stories, Scott is engaged in a low-grade - but escalating - battle with the lesbians next door whose dog regularly drops his business on Scott’s lawn. One of the women is friendly; the other, cold as ice.

Enjoyed the stories
Revisado: 07-28-22
The harsh reviews I read before purchasing made me wonder if King could have been so far off his usual high level of character development. Glad to say for me he was on the mark for BOTH short stories.
The second story is a little gem. Reflecting on age and loss and dogs in a few minutes of telling that took me to a satisfactory conclusion and moment of contemplation.
Well worth the price of admission.

Historia
In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.

How many of us would be as honest as Trevor Noah?
Not many at his relatively young age.
The apartheid insights are powerful, but the love of family and the acknowledgment that relationship is the only real reason for hope and strength is not part of many successful people’s primary life lessons,

Historia
Written with bracing wit and intelligence, Rachel Maddow's Drift argues that we've drifted away from America's original ideals and become a nation weirdly at peace with perpetual war, with all the financial and human costs that entails. To understand how we've arrived at such a dangerous place, Maddow takes us from the Vietnam War to today's war in Afghanistan.

Every American Should Read This Book Now
Revisado: 05-02-12
Would you listen to Drift again? Why?
Yes. I will listen to parts to remember and clarify details to share and discuss with others.
What did you like best about this story?
The organization of the information gave a clear picture of our course away from making war the last choice, not the first, to solve problems.
Which character – as performed by Rachel Maddow – was your favorite?
Not a fictional book, but Rachel did a great job giving insights into the decisions made by the presidents and their advisors..
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The nuclear weapons information makes you shudder at the amazing lack of safety and control. It could make you a little crazy if you let it.
Any additional comments?
Rachel did a great job reading her work. Good pace and 'entertained' while you visited the dark side.

First Audible J. Carroll Book (hope for many more)
Revisado: 02-17-11
I am happy that Audible has presented an audio version of a Jonathan Carroll book. I have been lobbying for a while and was eager to listen. The reviews to this point are accurate reflections of the fact that it is not a straight forward story, but deals with questions about reality and our existence. The book previous to this "White Apples" also had elements of the slipperiness of existence/consciousness/reality. The ability to shift the 'frame' or change the view of reality is what I have enjoyed in his work. It is also what makes you think about the books months or years later. I hope earlier works will be recorded. I vote for "Bones of the Moon" and "Land of Laughs" to start because I think those may appeal to the voracious listeners who like variety and want something a little different. The reference in one review to Monty Python resonates in this respect.
I thought the narrator did a good job with most of the voices.

Revisado: 04-12-09
The Ender stories are well done. The other stories are of wonderful quality. Most of them left me wanting more or thinking about what I thought would happen next. This is the beauty of the short story. The afterwords by the authors are interesting looks into the process of writing from many different viewpoints. The narrators are well paired with the selecions. I like short stories and think this collections is well worth the listen.
