Historia
The Cthulhu Mythos is one of the 20th century's most singularly recognizable literary creations. Initially created by H. P. Lovecraft and a group of his amorphous contemporaries (the so-called "Lovecraft Circle"), The Cthulhu Mythos story cycle has taken on a convoluted, cyclopean life of its own. Some of the most prodigious writers of the 20th century, and some of the most astounding writers of the 21st century have planted their seeds in this fertile soil. The Book of Cthulhu harvests the weirdest and most corpulent crop of these modern mythos tales.

Awesome
Revisado: 03-13-25
Great talent, great stories, plenty of meaty plots. Top shelf quality that you do seldom get with Lovecraftian books

Historia
1989, Lamesa, Texas. A small west Texas town driven by oil and cotton—and a place where everyone knows everyone else’s business. So it goes for Tolly Driver, a good kid with more potential than application, seventeen, and about to be cursed to kill for revenge. Here Stephen Graham Jones explores the Texas he grew up in, and shared sense of unfairness of being on the outside through the slasher horror Jones loves, but from the perspective of the killer, Tolly, writing his own autobiography. Find yourself rooting for a killer in this summer teen movie of a novel gone full blood-curdling tragic.

Absolutely perfect
Revisado: 12-19-24
I lived in Texas and listen to horror all day every day. This book is so exceptional. Original, smart without pretension, funny and violent. One of the best books of the last year. Funny he mentions Billy Summers in the notes; it’s the last book I heard that was this good. This might even be a little better

Historia
Maverick Hall has spent years trying to forget the chilling events of his thirteenth birthday in the summer of 1999. That fateful night, he and his best friends ventured through a seemingly innocuous tunnel on their bikes — a journey from which not all of them returned. Now, as an adult, Maverick is haunted by a sinister force that compels him to return to his old neighborhood, a place shadowed by secrets, deceit, and an unsettling sense of death. Drawn back against his better judgment, he must face the dark forces that have lurked in waiting, eager for his return.

Nothing tremendously original. Sort of like the Outsider meets Lovecraft. But absolutely worth your time. Entertaining and written in a fresh new tone. Narrator I’d give an 8.5/10. Not Will Patton good but getting there. That’s saying something

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

It’s rare to have an ending of this kind without it being hackneyed or annoying or out-of-plot. This book is the one all those crappy ones are trying to be. Fantastic reader. Top shelf

Solid, straightforward storytelling
Revisado: 05-21-24
Narration was quite good. I prefer a kind of middle of the road mid-range voice and this was quite listenable. No exaggeration or theatrics. The same can be said of the stories. You won’t find any shocking twists here. But some excellent ideas executed with the flair of a professional who would rather leave things unsaid than bore the listener. I like that he’s a fan of modern horror because it gives him a great command of the lexicon and a flair for contextual narrative devices.

Uncommonly good (super)natural horror
Revisado: 05-01-24
Well paced, well read. Exquisitely written. Sometimes so well phrased that you find yourself reading it back just for the prose. But this isn’t some arty, stuck up, self-referential anthology.
It never gets boring or loses its edge. It’s not just another book full of stories you’ve already heard in another form. This is that rare book that balances entertainment, pulpy accessibility, phenomenal writing and contemplations of both man and the monster. Sometimes it’s the one in the mirror.
I’m hard to please. Everything’s too highbrow or lowbrow nowadays. But this proves it’s still possible to hit the sweet spot.
This is a lot like King that way. With limited exposition and a complete lack of guile. There are meta truths here, but you won’t find any irony. Each of these stories was written by someone who was ALL IN on their love for the reader, and determined to keep us entertained at all costs. BUY THIS

Too boring for me…
Revisado: 10-30-21
This moves slow. The characters feel dated, and the story just isn’t that interesting or revelatory the only reason I kept listening was the narrator, but after a few hours of this, I’m done. Sorry. I really wanted to like this book

Historia
Billy Halleck commits vehicular manslaughter when his lack of attention results in the death of an old gypsy lady on the street. Overweight Halleck is a lawyer with connections, though, and he gets off with a slap on the wrist. After the trial, the victim's ancient father curses him with a single word: "thinner". Shedding weight by the week, Halleck is desperate enough for one last gamble...one that will lead him to a nightmare showdown with the forces of evil melting his flesh away.

Cannot finish this. I’m sorry
Revisado: 03-02-21
The advent of empowered readers sometimes means putting up with monotonous fiction and misplaced affect. I get it. Unfortunately, I’ll never know how good this book was. The woman reading it cannot distinguish sentence clauses from adjectives any better than she can mimic the voice of anyone other than herself. Authors - if you think a great story will hold up under the diction of someone with three basic emotive responses - please reconsider. This person sounds like they are reading in a junior high English class. Up and down in tone, no change in voice. Just awful. Sorry
