Historia
When Emilia discovers a human finger, sold as a relic of a famous Mexican martyr, it seems to be evidence of a gruesome kidnapping. It also triggers memories of a painful episode Emilia won't share with gringo hotel manager Kurt Rucker. Struggling with her past, Emilia is plunged into danger as she uncovers how many times the finger was bought and sold before ending up in a posh store. Meanwhile, a rare type of heroin connects to a cruise ship murder, promising more drug war violence for Acapulco's already blood-soaked streets.

A glimpse of Mexico from the inside
Revisado: 02-25-25
I had my heart in my throat several times during this book. I can’t imagine being a police officer in Mexico with all the crime and corruption. Never knowing who you can trust must be horrible. And then to be a woman police officer adds another level of fear. Emilia’s fellow cops haven’t always made her life easy at all and have sometimes put her in horrible situations. But there are good people in her life too and that makes this book both believable and enjoyable. Emilia is starting to blossom as she finally allows Kurt inside and lets go of some of her past secrets. Emilia is smart, sometimes a bit reckless, and very human. This book has a lot of darkness but it’s balanced well and I really like this series. The narration was fantastic once I got used to the accent.

Never in my 40 years did I think my new normal would be gluing body parts back onto ghosts and hosting a houseful of dead squatters. Thank God for superglue and a strong stomach. Never thought I’d date the Grim Reaper and that I would be the one to blow it. I mean, how idiotic does one have to be to get dumped by a dude who lives in Hell? Going about business as usual is not usual in any way. No one is who they seem to be...and to be honest, neither am I. What I’d known to be true has turned out to be myth. The angels are frightening, and the demons are hot.

Love this series!
Revisado: 09-29-24
This series just got even better. The second book was amazing. So much angst and evil and love, many battles, much deception and magic made this an amazing and epic tale. And of course the big beasties are fascinating. I don’t know where the next book in the series can possibly go but I am on board to go along for the ride. An aside, it did get confusing at times when it switched back and forth between the past and present but if didn’t harm my enjoyment.

"Something is murdering my men." Thus reads the message received from a Nazi commander stationed in a small castle high in the remote Transylvanian Alps. Invisible and silent, the enemy selects one victim per night, leaving the bloodless and mutilated corpses behind to terrify its future victims. When an elite SS extermination squad is dispatched to solve the problem, the men find something that's both powerful and terrifying. Panicked, the Nazis bring in a local expert on folklore - who just happens to be Jewish - to shed some light on the mysterious happenings.

Good vs Evil
Revisado: 02-08-24
4.5 stars rounded up to 5. What a unique take on …. Vampires? It reminded me a little of the Highlander series. Very enjoyable. Lots of history mixed in. Bad guys that it was easy to dislike getting murdered? I’m in! Excellent job with creepy atmosphere and explanations that surprised me. The ending was fabulous!! Lots of tension throughout. Every reveal was a red herring until the absolute last quarter or so. What an evil entity that was so good at manipulating even the best of souls. Loved this!!

Immature and disjointed
Revisado: 02-03-24
I am torn between 2 and 3 stars with this one. There were some interesting ideas but it didn’t flow well. It seemed immature and disjointed. I listened to the audiobook and I saw what another reviewer said about having to listen to it at 1.8X speed. I did too. The narrator was soooo slow. I also hated the political rants. So it was a so so listen for me. I think Stan Lee’s name was used to sell something mediocre. I didn’t hate all of it so I am giving it 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.

Kept me on the edge of my seat!
Revisado: 12-31-23
Wow! That was fun, exciting, and terrifying all at once. Don’t get me wrong….parts were completely ridiculous liken to a James Bond variety of novel and/or movie. However, if you can leave reality behind and get swept up in the story it’s a really fun novel. I mean an untrained person going into space and not passing out is completely ludicrous. But it was still really fun. McCracken balls has a new cheerleader. Count me in! It was a great audiobook!

Eight-year-old orphan Beth Harmon is quiet, sullen, and by all appearances unremarkable. That is, until she plays her first game of chess. Her senses grow sharper, her thinking clearer, and for the first time in her life she feels herself fully in control. By the age of 16, she's competing for the US Open championship. But as Beth hones her skills on the professional circuit, the stakes get higher, her isolation grows more frightening, and the thought of escape becomes all the more tempting.

I liked a book about chess?!?
Revisado: 12-22-22
I was debating between a 4 and 5 star rating and I am going with 5 stars because this author actually made me read about chess and like it! I loved the ending. That was the real icing on the cake for me. Beth was sometimes hard to like but overall she was a pretty strong character that did an amazing job raising herself. Because ultimately that is what she did. I am so glad that her experimentation and trial and error with drugs and alcohol didn’t ultimately snuff her life or talent out. Jolene was the perfect choice to help her turn her life around. An amazing story. And not always an easy story. Definitely worth your time.

Dewey Andreas is amazing!
Revisado: 09-27-20
What can I say? The sequel was equally entertaining. A true warrior has to have training, quick thinking, and a certain amount of luck to live very long. Yes, of course, sometimes it seems a bit too amazing that he survives some of the situations he gets himself into or he finds himself in. However we all love a hero and that’s part of the story. They somehow survive, go on to avenge their brothers in arms, and save the world yet again. I’m ok with that. I very much enjoy Dewey Andreas and will keep reading this series.

A story set during the pandemic
Revisado: 08-28-20
This one was a little tough for me. Partly because it was predominantly about relationships without much action. But mostly because it’s set in the quarantine and pandemic going on now. I keep trying to pretend this is over because I’m tired of behaving in such a crazy way even though the death rate is not as great as it is for the flu. It feels like the world has gone mad and focusing on it is NOT something I want to do. So it was rather painful for a while. But overall the story was a good one and there was more going on then I first expected. It won’t be a read for everyone but it is a good story.
