Historia
Britain's Special Air Service - or SAS - was the brainchild of David Stirling, a young, gadabout aristocrat whose aimlessness in early life belied a remarkable strategic mind. Where most of his colleagues looked at a battlefield map of World War II's African theater and saw a protracted struggle with Rommel's desert forces, Stirling saw an opportunity: Given a small number of elite, well-trained men, he could parachute behind enemy lines and sabotage their airplanes and war matériel.

An interesting overview
Revisado: 02-09-25
The first half of the book was very interesting. Learning about how the unit was formed and the characters that made it what it was/is, was fascinating.
The second half was still good, but contains more about the operations the SAS became involved in, rather than the people.

Historia
If anyone could be considered a Russian counterpart to the infamous British double-agent Kim Philby, it was Oleg Gordievsky. The son of two KGB agents and the product of the best Soviet institutions, the savvy, sophisticated Gordievsky grew to see his nation's communism as both criminal and philistine. He took his first posting for Russian intelligence in 1968 and eventually became the Soviet Union's top man in London, but from 1973 on he was secretly working for MI6.

Well told story with good pace

I didn’t know that much about this case but found the story very engaging, with a good level of detail without getting bogged down.
That narrator was also very good.

Historia
When a local man, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, goes missing, his parents have good reason to be concerned. Emily Willows is a friend of the family and says that she knows just the person to find him - and, as Summer Lane soon points out, the fact that this also fits in with Emily's plan to set up her very own detective agency is surely just a fortuitous coincidence.

Historia
There is nothing more essential to our health and well-being than breathing. Yet, as a species, humans have lost the ability to breathe correctly, with grave consequences. Journalist James Nestor travels the world to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it. The answers aren’t found in pulmonology labs, as we might expect, but in the muddy digs of ancient burial sites, secret Soviet facilities, New Jersey choir schools, and the smoggy streets of São Paulo. Nestor tracks down men and women exploring the hidden science behind ancient breathing practices.

Interesting, but poorly narrated
Revisado: 05-06-24
This is an interesting topic that clearly doesn’t get the attention it deserves when we think about health.
However, he should have employed a professional narrator. I found it very difficult to listen to more than a chapter at a time as it was almost painful to listen to.

An interesting novel, but ultimately too drawn out.
Revisado: 03-31-23
The protagonist and his cast of supporting characters are equally engaging and infuriating. But the thoughts it raises on how to become a “moral person” are familiar ones for fans of Murdoch.
The only pity is it is overly long in the middle section and is obsession with an old flame. The point would have been made in half the words devoted to this.
The narrator was excellent.

Interesting for the non-scientist
Revisado: 03-31-23
This is a good review of the main areas of focus in anti-aging. It’s suitable for the non-scientist. My only wish is that it was a little more in depth and technical in some places, but there’s enough in here to spur further research if you’re so inclined.

A decent listen
Revisado: 05-27-22
I’ve only listened a few of Robert Harris’s books but I really enjoyed them. The series on Cicero was excellent.
This one was as captivating. The story is fine, but we know how it ends up and there’s no real point to the protagonists story.
Still, it’s good enough to listen to and the narrator is very good.
