Historia
In 1974, the Supreme Court issued a momentous decision: In the case of Milliken v. Bradley, the justices brought a halt to school desegregation across the North, and to the civil rights movement’s struggle for a truly equal education for all. How did this come about, and why? In The Containment, the esteemed legal scholar Michelle Adams tells the epic story of the struggle to integrate Detroit schools—and what happened when it collided with Nixon-appointed justices committed to a judicial counterrevolution.

Revealing an important part of US History
Revisado: 02-05-25
This book should be a must-read, even in high school in the US - maybe part of AP US History. Much of our history is swept under the rug so that we can cling to a mythical ideal of our country. Without an understanding of what really has happened we cannot possibly work to improve our country which I so love.

Historia
Over the course of a 30-year career, Eddie Izzard has proven himself to be a creative chameleon, inhabiting the stage and film and television screens with an unbelievable fervor. Born in Yemen and raised in Ireland, Wales, and postwar England, he lost his mother at the age of six. In his teens he dropped out of university and took to the streets of London as part of a two-man escape act; when his partner went on vacation, Izzard kept busy by inventing a one-man act, and thus a career was ignited.

Building a life with heart!
Revisado: 03-17-24
This is a great story that makes real the importance of determination and perseverance as the key attributes to create great things. Too many artists, actors, entrepreneurs and others hide the time, sweat and serial disappointments that has to be overcome - most one to make it look effortless. It never is! Well done Eddie for all the great and diverse things you’ve achieved, and telling the story of what it took to reach those heights.

Historia
The quest for social justice is a powerful crusade of our time, with an appeal to many different people, for many different reasons. But those who use the same words do not always present the same meanings. Clarifying those meanings is the first step toward finding out what we agree on and disagree on. From there, it is largely a question of what the facts are. Social Justice Fallacies reveals how many things that are thought to be true simply cannot stand up to documented facts, which are often the opposite of what is widely believed.

Correlation is not causality
Revisado: 11-05-23
Some of the examples given by the author claiming clear evidence of the failure of one or another policy is offered without evidence of a causal link. For example the increase in teen pregnancy and STI was evidence on its face for the failure of the policy of teaching sex education in schools. I’ll trust the author that these were contemporaneous but absent a causal link it shouldn’t have made it into the book. Similarly, the advent of “softer legal & punishment” policies regarding occurred while murder rates rose. The author failed to establish a causal link. It is of course fiendishly challenging to extract causal relationships in complex systems, but without those links proved, the entire book is unconvincing.

John Cleese captures such an important part of what it is to be human. He also shines a light on our lamentable education system that not only doesn’t foster creative thinking, but has more or less attempted to stamp it out.

Historia
Freedom is on the decline around the world. Autocrats in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East are undermining our open societies, human rights, and the rule of law. The Russian invasion of Ukraine was a wake-up call for the West, but the biggest threat remains China. For two generations, Americans and Europeans have believed that change will come through trade, but instead of dictatorships becoming more like Western democracies, unfettered free trade has strengthened our enemies and undermined our countries.

An excellent, well-reasoned case for a new approach
Revisado: 10-05-23
Mathias does a phenomenal job describing the results of our international trade policies since WWII, and most particularly after the formation of the WTO and China’s inclusion in the trade pact. This is causing enormous harm and Mathias makes a cogent case for a new direction that everyone should read and help advocate for.

There's a silent epidemic in Western civilization, and it is right under our noses. Our jaws are getting smaller and our teeth crooked and crowded, creating not only aesthetic challenges but also difficulties with breathing. Sandra Kahn and Paul R. Ehrlich, a pioneering orthodontist and a world-renowned evolutionist, respectively, present the biological, dietary, and cultural changes that have driven us toward this major health challenge. They propose simple adjustments that can alleviate this developing crisis.

This book clearly lays out yet another area of medicine where symptoms are treated rather than addressing root causes. Everyone should read this book and understand how they and their children can be healthier and potentially live longer.

Historia
The story of humankind is usually told as one of technological innovation and economic influence—of arrowheads and atomic bombs, settlers and stock markets. But behind it all, there is an even more fundamental driver: Food. In Animal, Vegetable, Junk, trusted food authority Mark Bittman offers a panoramic view of how the frenzy for food has driven human history to some of its most catastrophic moments.

Revisado: 02-02-23
Mark Bittman takes a deep and thorough look at how we arrived at the food system we rely on today. He makes an interesting and informative journey of this story. The conclusion is clear: our ultra-processed food system is killing people and planet. It’s a worthwhile read to learn what we can all do to affect change. Well done, Mark!

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Great book and well narrated
Revisado: 05-07-21
Michael Lewis does a good job of shining a light on some of the best and least recognized among. It’s inspirational to learn about a handful of blue-flame thinking people serving in government roles and working for the public good. Adenrele Ojo, does an excellent job narrating the book, and I would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn more about what we’ve just been passing through. And we’re not even out the other side yet. Enjoy!

Widely considered to be Charles Dickens' greatest and best-loved work, Great Expectations was first published as a serial between December 1860 - August 1861 and has been in print ever since. The story of a young boy from humble origins who dares to dream of becoming a gentleman, it is one of Dickens' most enduring and widely adapted novels. In this new unabridged production, star comedian and polymath Eddie Izzard infuses the story of Pip with his trademark wit and flair.

Eddie Izzard does phenomenal work
Revisado: 04-08-21
Great Expectations was believed to be the most perfect novel Charles Dickens ever wrote. It’s a testament to Eddie’s versatility in voicing the many characters of the novel and it’s just wonderfully enjoyable book as a result. I would heartily recommend this to anyone, and maybe particularly to those who might have missed this book earlier in life.
