Historia
In an age of miracles where our greatest heroes from history have magically, unexplainably returned to shake us out of our confusion and hate, Harriet Tubman is back, and she has a lot to say. Harriet Tubman and four of the enslaved persons she led to freedom want to tell their story in a unique way. Harriet wants to create a hip-hop album and live show about her life, and she needs a songwriter to help her. She calls upon Darnell Williams, a once successful hip-hop producer who was topping the charts before being outed on a BET talk show.

Good enough to get on the banned books lists!

Very good. Short, full of history and metaphors for today. Probably 10 minutes away from being on the banned books lists.

Historia
Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: To write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the 20th Century.

Julia Whalen is amazing in this great story
Revisado: 04-25-25
2 love stories and a mystery. Covers a wealthy family history (with love story) from the 1800’s to present, and a present-day love story. I liked it, but I like all of her books. This was nice because both ‘present day’ love interests are mostly healthy. No fake/misunderstanding/leave in anger tropes that seem like a big head game. The past secrets prevent the present romance and are rigid with an NDA. Not a funny book, and it would have been spectacular as a funny book…

All thanks to Vera, because Tilly's girlfriend is none other than Officer Selena Gray. The very same Officer Gray that she had harassed while investigating the teahouse murder. Still, Vera wishes more dead bodies would pop up in her shop, but one mustn't be ungrateful, even if one is slightly...bored.

Love Vera!
Revisado: 04-07-25
Loved this. A Mystery that’s funny, serious, sad, thrilling, and the main character is a 61 year old busybody that gets into everyone’s business. Great book. The first book in this series is excellent as well. The murder is the result of a serious/sober/troubling issue, but it is not sensationalized…
2 quotes to give you the flavor of this book:
I will splash this over the social media. I am Chinese mother all I do is create conflict.
You think CIA know anything about destabilization? They know nothing compared to me.
Wow, that was bad ass Vera! Vera looks sternly and says ‘Robin! You are 13 years old. You do not call me by my first name. That is disrespectful. You will call me grandma.’
Yes! My ass is quite bad!

The male character wasn’t authentic. He ‘fell’ for the female character with very little interaction and stayed true while pushed away or tested… this was a supposed Hollywood producer that just lost his movie star wife.

I like that each character had personality and professional strengths. The narrator was a bit awkward in places, but I am glad that narration was available. I had wanted to read this book.

It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, and Charlotte and Seth are not looking for romance. Armed with emotional-support bear spray, Charlotte is in self-imposed isolation and on guard from men. Having a stalker can do that to a person’s nerves. Just across the hall and giving off woodsy vibes is Seth, a recently divorced arborist. As in today recently. Heights, he’s fine with. Trust? Not so much.

Lila Kennedy has a lot on her plate. A broken marriage, two wayward daughters, a house that is falling apart, and an elderly stepfather who seems to have quietly moved in. Her career is in freefall and her love life is . . . complicated. So when her real dad—a man she has barely seen since he ran off to Hollywood thirty-five years ago—suddenly appears on her doorstep, it feels like the final straw. But it turns out even the family you thought you could never forgive might have something to teach you: about love, and what it actually means to be family.

Humorous, poignant, and insightful
Revisado: 02-25-25
A lot to unpack in this story emotionally but full of witty (often dark) humor.
Loved the characters. Each contributed to the overall story. The author showed people can be villains to each other, and the impacts are crushing. Children are often collateral damage of the adult resentments and abandonments.
Finally, that forgiveness heals, bullies need to be faced, and isolation is toxic.
The love story was not entirely believable, however. Not bad though, because it was not the main part of the story.

Revisado: 02-22-25
2 dimensional characters. Basically both characters are reduced to being good looking people that only think about sex. So frustrating that a female writer reduces a woman to her physical attributes. The engineering pieces of their personalities are missing. Overall cringy and boring.

Excellent insight on emotional health
Revisado: 02-20-25
A black physician who was bullied and severely neglected as a child is friends with a famous actor and vows to break from him because he doesn’t love her back… she is a virgin (NOT the story here) and meets an author who just published his first book and it made the bestseller list.
All that aside, this is a story about depression with commentary about racism as a side dish. Excellent insight.
The love story arc is not as believable because the author character is so perfect that it doesn’t represent real life at all, but the emotional health streams are good.
