Historia
Union soldier John Chenneville suffered a traumatic head wound in battle. His recovery took the better part of a year as he struggled to regain his senses and mobility. By the time he returned home, the Civil War was over, but tragedy awaited. John’s beloved sister and her family had been brutally murdered. Their killer goes by many names. He fought for the North in the late unpleasantness, and wore a badge in the name of the law. But the man John knows as A. J. Dodd is little more than a rabid animal, slaughtering without reason or remorse, needing to be put down.

Another Jiles Gem
Revisado: 06-17-24
Paulette Jiles does not disappoint with this understated yet suspenseful tale of post-Civil War Texas. Jiles takes her time in developing the richness of her characters, and the wait to see how the story weaves together is well worth it. A satisfying and thoroughly enjoyable read.

Award Winner???
Revisado: 04-19-23
How does a book this poorly-written and even more poorly narrated get published, let alone win an award from audible.com? The writing is middle-school quality at best, and the story is lifeless. Someone should explain subtlety to this author-- and suspense as well. The characters are caricatures. I'm kicking myself that I was foolish enough to pay for this book. It'll be a long time until I fall for another "Daily Deal."

D-
Revisado: 10-08-22
This audiobook is a D- on every level. Foremost- the reader is terrible. Her voice for 12-year-old Jess sounds like Minnie Mouse. The plot has a lot of holes, and the characters aren’t genuine. The story reads like it was written from the perspective of a 7th grader. What responsible 40-year-old woman throws her cell phone against the wall? And TWO characters do that. The male characters are peripheral and poorly developed. And lastly, the plot stretches the limits of credulity.

Historia
Set in the wide-open spaces of the American West, The Power of the Dog is a stunning story of domestic tyranny, brutal masculinity, and thrilling defiance from one of the most powerful and distinctive voices in American literature. The novel tells the story of two brothers—one magnetic but cruel, the other gentle and quiet—and of the mother and son whose arrival on the brothers’ ranch shatters an already tenuous peace.

Best Daily Deal Ever
Revisado: 12-23-21
What a powerful character study! Even before I listened to Annie Proulx's afterword, I knew I had just listened to one of the finest novels of The West ever written. The unraveling of this story, understated and subtle, stirs a full range of emotions in the reader-- love, caring, angst, anger, fear, and incredible tension. What a rare gem this book is. Thanks, Audible, for offering this masterfully-written piece of literature as a Daily Deal. This book should be required reading in high school English classes.

I found the authors' narcissistic retelling of their relationship to be grating and boorish. I returned this audiobook because I really didn't want to hear two people talk about themselves for six hours.

Historia
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

A Very Weak Pull
Revisado: 01-23-21
I read this book because the Washington Post listed it as one of the 50 most notable works of fiction for 2020. The Post called it "a searing portrait of Irish women." I have to disagree. This book is pointless and plotless, a melodramatic documentary of obstetrical procedures and hospital practices of the early 20th century in urban Ireland. The setting of the story at the time of the influenza outbreak of 1918 is nothing more than a hook to draw in the reader who is curious about the pandemic. The very unimaginative story line is played out through one-dimensional characters and almost entirely within the confines of a hospital room. I suppose this was intended to be a "woman's story," but it's tiresome to read a story in which most of the female characters are good and righteous and wise while all the male characters are abusive, vain know-it-alls. And that's just one more reason to skip this book.

Historia
In 1912, scientist Marie Curie spent two months on the British seaside at the home of Hertha Ayrton, an accomplished mathematician, inventor, and suffragette. At the time, Curie was in the throes of a scandal in France over her affair with Paul Langevin, which threatened to overshadow the accomplishment of her second Nobel Prize. Performed by Kate Mulgrew and Francesca Faridany at the Minetta Lane Theatre, this play by Lauren Gunderson is an ode to two remarkable women.

The performances outshine the story in this glimpse into the lives of two scientists who were ahead of their time in many ways. Listening to this performance makes me want to see the show enacted on the stage.

Historia
Can a young war correspondent find herself and follow her heart? In this work of historical fiction, 20-something Annabella “Annie” March arrives in France in 1944 intending to write about the war. Soon, however, Annie begins to distance herself from her sometimes-mentor, sometimes-rival - the great Martha Gellhorn - and Gellhorn’s larger-than-life husband, the novelist Ernest Hemingway. She turns to photography in the hopes of making her own name and, to her delight, discovers that images come more easily than words.

Weak Waste of Time
Revisado: 12-28-19
Yet another lame WWII story. Weak, stereotypical female characters. Annoying narration. Actually, speeding it up made it tolerable, but the narrator's pronunciation of French, and even some English, words made me cringe. I know it was free, but don't waste your time.

Historia
This is One of Ours, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Willa Cather, America’s greatest writer of the prairie heartland. It is set in rural Nebraska in the early 20th century prior to the first World War that enveloped Europe and eventually the United States. The story focuses on the young Claude Wheeler, a well-to-do farmer’s son who secretly longs for something to take him away from the hum-drum agrarian life he has inherited. As he prepares to take over his family’s farm business, war intrudes.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 11-22-19
This book is, quite simply, a masterpiece. Willa Cather weaves this tale in her understated, yet powerful style. The setting provides the backdrop for the lives of a cast of well-developed and multi-dimensional characters. I found myself thinking about the story long after I finished reading.

Historia
James Dommek, Jr., an Alaska Native writer and musician, sheds new light on a real-life mystery that pits Native American folklore against the US justice system. In the vast Alaskan Arctic, legend has it there once lived a mythic tribe—Iñukuns—that only existed in rumors and whispers. This changed forever when an actor-turned-fugitive, Teddy Kyle Smith, had an encounter that brought Iñukuns from myth to reality. Smith was an aspiring actor with a promising career until it all came quickly crashing down with a gunshot, a manhunt, bloodshed, and other frightful events.
