Historia
Mrs. Sookie Poole of Point Clear, Alabama, has just married off the last of her daughters and is looking forward to relaxing and perhaps traveling with her husband, Earle. The only thing left to contend with is her mother, the formidable Lenore Simmons Krackenberry. Lenore may be a lot of fun for other people, but is, for the most part, an overbearing presence for her daughter. Then one day, quite by accident, Sookie discovers a secret about her mother's past that knocks her for a loop and suddenly calls into question everything she ever thought she knew about herself, her family, and her future.

Great story
Revisado: 01-05-15
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. My only issue is with the author as narrator. For the character voices she's great, but the narration gets rather stilted. That's a minor issue, though. Loved the history, characters, & story.

So-so
Revisado: 08-12-14
This book was interesting enough that I finished it, but I considered stopping a few times. It's certainly not a gripping page-turner. Only a few characters are fully fleshed out, and some of the actions taken by them I found totally implausible. Narration was excellent, though.

Problematic narrator
Revisado: 04-01-14
I enjoyed the book, although I thought there were a few too many convenient coincidences. My main complaint was the narrator. She reads well, but fails to differentiate between the voices, so they all sound the same. For a while I wondered who the third person was on the island. Without any distinction it's difficult to remember who's talking at any given time. Still, I gave it four stars for the enjoyable story.

Ugh
Revisado: 09-07-13
I quit reading about a quarter of the way through the book. If you like characters who enjoy pit-bull fighting, kill dogs, beat their wives, or sleep with (and get pregnant by) their sister's fiance, this is the book for you. I thought the main character was a wuss and the rest were just revolting. Maybe it gets better later, but I wasn't interested in finding out. Very disappointing, since I have read and enjoyed other books by this author. Narrator was fine.

Historia
A high-profile attorney in the middle of a leave of absence following a personal tragedy is drawn back into the legal arena amidst a media firestorm when he agrees to represent a popular rap artist accused of brutally murdering his pop star girlfriend. With its powerful voice, pause-resisting tension, and strong cast of characters, Adam Mitzner’s novels are reminiscent of such best-selling authors as Scott Turow and John Grisham.

Really enjoyed it
Revisado: 07-15-13
Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was I thought the trial narrative was a bit too long. Otherwise a satisfying read, with twist & turns that didn't seem ridiculous. Good characterizations and an outstanding narration. I'll look for Kevin Collins as a narrator again.

A little preachy

I didn't feel like this was as good as the first one, but still an enjoyable read. Some surprises, but if the entire series is going to be environmentalists vs. ranchers, I'm not sure I'll continue.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Fascinating

Before listening to this book I didn't know anything about Garfield's assassination, other than that it happened. This is a well-written, fascinating look into the event as well as that particular time period. Narration is excellent.

Historia
Joe Pickett is the new game warden in Twelve Sleep, Wyoming, a town where nearly everyone hunts and the game warden—especially one like Joe who won't take bribes or look the other way—is far from popular. When he finds a local hunting outfitter dead, splayed out on the woodpile behind his state-owned home, he takes it personally. There had to be a reason that the outfitter, with whom he's had run-ins before, chose his backyard, his woodpile to die in.

Enjoyed it
Revisado: 04-19-13
What did you love best about Open Season?
I downloaded this one for a long trip, because I like something on the lighter side when I travel. This was a good choice. I couldn't give it 5 stars because it's not a brilliant book that will stay with me forever, but character development is always the most important part of a book for me, and I enjoyed Joe and his family very much. The plot took a while to get started, but before long it got interesting. It was also not too long and drawn out, and the reader was excellent.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Keeper of Lost Causes to be better than the print version?
Absolutely -- due to the fabulous narration.
Any additional comments?
One of the best audiobooks I've read/listened to in a long time. Narrator was wonderful, making all the characters come alive. Plot was so interesting and characters so compelling -- I can't say enough good things about it. I usually listen to these books in spurts in the car or on a plane, but this one was so good I couldn't wait until my next trip to find out what happened, so listened to the last hour or so at home.

Historia
This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

Couldn't get through it
Revisado: 03-17-12
What disappointed you about Skippy Dies?
While it has some clever descriptive writing, this book about a bunch of teenage boys in the UK eventually turned me off. I just couldn't get interested in the characters, and got tired of the graphic sex and general teenage boy stuff. The narration was ok, but a good single narrator could have pulled it off without multiple narrators taking the different roles. I no longer feel I have to finish books that don't hold my interest, so I didn't.
