This is a first-class performance with a talented cast! It’s definitely worth listening to, if only for the author’s 😉 references to Dickens‘ larger body of work. If you’re a Dickens fan, I highly recommend it. Old characters you love in a new adventure, what more could you ask for?

Starts off with bitterness, but hang in there!

This is a memoir, ONE woman's perspective on her husband's transition to female. Thus, many strong emotions will definitely play a role. In the early chapters, the author seems exasperated, frustrated, bitter, and hostile. But of course these are the emotions she was feeling as she was living through all of this. It's perfectly natural that her writing about that time would be deeply emotional and even bitter. It also seems like her transgendered ex has larger mental health issues on the basis of his actions and poor decision-making skills.

I must admit, I almost stopped listening to this book (I DON'T do that as a rule) because her attitude started to annoy me, and I was worried the narrative was possibly headed in an anti-trans direction. But I hung in there, and I'm glad I did. This is certainly NOT an anti-trans narrative! It is just providing a point of view that is underrepresented in the conversation surrounding transsexuality: that of the spouse and children that sometimes get left behind. It's an accurate memoir of grief for the loss of a spouse, a father, and a family's collective vision of their future together.

Smoke and Mirrors is one of my all-time favorite collections! I love the mix of prose and poetry and have enjoyed this book since it was first released in the '90s. I am a big fan of Neil Gaiman overall, and eagerly await every new release, although I reread his old works fairly regularly. Having read Smoke and Mirrors so many times over the years, I feel as if these are the fairytales that I grew up with. And I love that the author narrates his own work not only because he has a wonderful voice and is an engaging narrator but also because he reads with the true intent because he's the one who wrote it. I don't think you can get much better than that!

You don't know how much you don't know about human sexuality! I'm sure there will be novel information for any reader, even the sexperts among us. Mary Roach is adept at making technical and scientific information easily understood by the layperson without talking down to her audience. I love reading her books because I learn so much about everyday topics that I didn't know before (and I work in STEM publishing so I come across a lot of research). Read this book and you'll learn more about your body, your sexuality, differences between men's and women's bodies and sexuality, Homo sapiens' sexuality in general, as well as the sexuality of a few other animals. And, last but certainly not least, there is SO much fascinating information about orgasms!

I very much enjoyed both books so far in this series, but it's quite obvious that they were written and meant to be read Once Upon a Crime first and then Gretel and the Case of the Missing Frog Prints second. I don't know why they were published out of order with OUC being described as a "prequel," because this book ends chronologically exactly where GCMFP begins. There's a lot of exposition and universe building in OUC that would have been helpful when reading the first book in the series, GCMFP. I'm sure this unusual publication order had more to do with marketing (perhaps because Gretel's name is in the title of GCMFP?) or production schedules and not the author's intention.

Although both books are enjoyable and understandable in the current series order, I would recommend reading the second book (GCMFP) first and the first book (OUC) second! I like this series not only for its whimsy, storybook elements, and enjoyable mix of characters, but also because it has a smart, funny female protagonist, Gretel, who happens to be a private detective, a premise that lends itself well to myriad fun adventures in future books.
