Spectacular narration of an excellent mystery

This is a terrific book. A very literate mystery with an authentic Texas feel. The characters are deep, The prose is clean and sometimes witty. But what really makes this audio book is the narration. Catherine Taber as Odette is excellent but it's Jenna Lamia as Angel who steals the show. That's as stellar a narration as I've ever heard. MacLeod Andrews is good too. Really hope someone good makes this into a movie. Julia Garner as Angel?

Great reading of a good book

This is a terrific reading of a very good but flawed book. There are two main problems. The first is that the legal proceedings don’t make any sense. Why exactly does Charlotte turn from a defense lawyer to the prosecutor? Second, I really dislike the ending. Hiding the ball from the reader for that long and just having a twist come out seems like a cheat. But I did like the rest of the book. I like the 19th century style pros and the characters by and large. I don’t know what to say about the work of Lauren Ambrose. But she completely appears to capture the flavor of the writing and does a great job with voices and dialogue.

Fabulous book, fabulously narrated

A hugely funny and poignant work that doesn't shy from taking on controversial issues. Brilliantly plotted with each detail turning out to matter. The performances of both the two narrators is absolutely outstanding.

Incredibly funny

An extremely funny book. I will never look at a Volvo the same way. The performance was very good too.

Just not very interesting

I tried. Four hours. And I just couldn’t get interested in the characters or setting. It’s hard to read the narration. I guess there was nothing wrong with it but it didn’t manage to make anything better.

Did the narrator not like the book?

Usually audible narrators are fantastic. The performance here seems rushed with little effort to distinguish among the voices of the characters. Disappointing.

Intricate plot, good dialogue, desperately needed an editor

This is a fascinating piece of 19 century literature with terrific dialogue and a bizarre mixture of residual misogyny and criticism of manners and marital laws throughout the United Kingdom. The plot is, shall we say, intricate, at times straining credulity. The book would’ve been significantly improved by an aggressive editor who could have trimmed some of the unnecessary subplots and somewhat repetitious meanderings. Did we really need to learn about the owls at the summer house? The performance is Excellent, with distinct voicing

Fabulous performance of awesome book

The voicing of the characters here is incredible. That’s a good thing because the characters are drawn beautifully. Highly recommended.
