Okay, long

A good story, but nothing earth shattering. Not a yawn in my opinion, as some reviewers have suggested. Moved along okay. Decent ending.

Crammed into the Packard along with Jubie are her three siblings, her mother, and the family’s black maid, Mary Luther. Okay
Revisado: 05-19-23
A good story, some excellent characters (but also some rather cliche/flat characters). The ending seemed to throw in a bit too much new material that was unnecessary in my opinion.

Kind of expected more from the author of Cold Mountain. Maybe that warps my ratings. Not terrible, just didn’t live up to my expectations.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Historia
Nora Brown teaches high school English and lives a quiet life in Seattle with her husband and six-year-old daughter. But one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a girl’s face appears above the students’ desks—“a wild numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs should have been. Terror rushes through Nora’s body—the kind of raw terror you feel when there’s no way out, when every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire—when you think you might die.”

Why can’t I just stop when it’s awful?
Revisado: 05-04-23
This was really pretty terrible. I actually did quit, but my OCD (for real) just wouldn’t let me leave a book unfinished. Thus, unfortunately, I can say that it is terrible to the bitter end. Pointlessly dark. Trigger warnings galore. Pass on this one.
