Historia
Ariadne Hui thrives on routine. So what if everything in her life is planned down to the minute: That’s the way she likes it. If she’s going to make partner in Toronto’s most prestigious law firm, she needs to stay focused at all times. But when she comes home after yet another soul-sucking day to find an unfamiliar, gorgeous man camped out in her living room, focus is the last thing on her mind. Especially when her roommate explains this is Choi Jihoon, her cousin freshly arrived from Seoul to mend a broken heart. He just needs a few weeks to rest and heal.

SO cute!
Revisado: 11-29-22
Lily Chu can do no wrong: She writes sweet, funny, tender romances that keep you company wherever you listen to audiobooks. I couldn't wait for this one after reading The Stand-In, and while I do thing that one was a bit tighter in terms of flow, this was obviously something she put her heart into writing. I love that her characters are always flawed and complex and that they often go against their best interests, just like we all do. Lily Chu writes women the way I want to read about them: Funny, biting, smart, messy, tender, kind, determined. And Phillipa Soo has the best reading voice. Seriously, like butter.

Historia
Aster lives in the low-deck slums of the HSS Matilda, a space vessel organized much like the antebellum South. For generations the Matilda has ferried the last of humanity to a mythical Promised Land. On its way the ship's leaders have imposed harsh moral restrictions on dark-skinned sharecroppers like Aster, whom they consider to be less than human.

I wanted to love this.
Revisado: 04-06-22
There is so much here to love and so much potential, but I was so distracted by what began to feel like torture p*rn. I love the representation of someone on the spectrum, I love the discussion of gender, I love the way righteous anger plays such a huge role in the story. I just stopped feeling compelled by the story once the amount of tragedy left so little room for hope. I wanted so much more for Aster. Just because it's not for me doesn't mean that it's not for you, though. It's a cool premise and an extremely intersectional book that allows for messy, complicated things to play out in ways that aren't sterilized for comfort.

Historia
Patricia Campbell's life has never felt smaller. Her ambitious husband is too busy to give her a goodbye kiss in the morning, her kids have their own lives, her senile mother-in-law needs constant care, and she's always a step behind on thank-you notes and her endless list of chores. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a close-knit group of Charleston women united by their love of true crime and paperback fiction. At these meetings they're as likely to talk about the Manson family as they are marriage, motherhood, and neighborhood gossip.

Bahni Turpin is a master narrator. She is unmatched in skill and vocal talent, and I would let her read me a phone book from 1995 from somewhere densely populated.
Content Spoilers:
This story was SO good. I just deeply wish authors would stop using s*xual assault against women as a plot point when it's not necessary. You can corrupt or hurt an innocent character without resorting to r*pe. This book DID that very thing in so many circumstances, I was so disappointed when it went there.
I appreciate that the villain is both an actual monster and a monster in the way we think of serial killers. I loved that these women felt true to their Southern roots. I thought that they could have faced more direct consequences of their inaction in terms of race and socio-economics, since the book had a lot to say about these issues but doesn't seem to follow through-- These families and communities are destroyed, but that seems to be a footnote at the end of a white woman's story. Not really a criticism, but food for thought. I suppose that the author relied on the reality that, most often, the destruction of Black communities and families ARE just footnotes in white stories.

Don't Think, Just Read
Revisado: 02-25-22
The narrator of this story is perfection. This is not an easy story to tell, but it is a masterful and heartbreaking one. Best book I've read in 2022.

Historia
My name's Griz. I've never been to school, I've never had friends, and in my whole life I've not met enough people to play a game of football. My parents told me how crowded the world used to be, before all the people went away. But we were never lonely on our remote island. We had each other and our dogs. Then the thief came.

conflicted
Revisado: 01-06-17
loved the story, upset about the ending. the writing is beautiful and witty and so funny, but the narrator's "American" accent was painfully nasal and all over the place. I found it distracting enough that I often had to pause and come back to the book. Otherwise, the various British and African accents were beautifully done.
Would definitely recommend the book, which is bold and funny and raw without alienating its readers. I am white, and found myself laughing and nodding along with her frank assessments of white Americans. She tells the truth in a way that is informative and accessible.

Historia
This transcendent story follows four college friends who move to New York City, buoyed by ambition: Willem, an aspiring actor; JB, an artist; Malcolm, an architect; and, at the center, Jude, a withdrawn, brilliant attorney haunted by an unspeakable past. Through decades of shared and separate lives, Jude’s suffering - and its impact on those who love him - raises questions about the limits of human endurance, the possibility for redemption, and the meaning of friendship.

heartbreaking.
Revisado: 12-15-16
A story of life and loss and longing, this book is the definition of "aching". By the end, I nearly found myself relieved, but desperately sad that it was over. The characters draw you in and make you feel like a participant in their theater of tragedy. Lovely and awful, devastating and life-affirming. A new favorite, though I'm hesitant to share it with others, just now. I'm not ready to invite anyone into the private hurts that this story explores.
