Honestly, each chapter was better than the last & getting to the crux of the matter in that gentle but very real way of Matthew’s—he shows us why, incorporates stories, quotes, facts, and love like Psyche weaving a masterpiece. And then when you think it cant get better, it does. The final chapters on leaving and healing were approached with care but direct. I wish I had this book 20 years ago b/c Matthew Hussey challenges me to raise my bar—that bar I’ve been dragging around like a caveman, & clubbing myself in the face. Cuz damn, just having someone spell out how to leave—how hard it to do so…no one ever said anything like this to me. You can’t get to your love life if you’ve got a narcissistic Neanderthal hanging onto your very low bar. *chef kiss*

This book was like finding the missing link in my trauma recovery. Elusive emotions and the lack of language was crippling. Add in the concept of ‘near enemies’ and I’ve gained an understanding of humanity that no therapist ever came close to. I hope that people take this to heart and realize ‘when we are reckless with peoples stories we diminish our own humanity.’ The gratitude for this insight is cosmic. Thank you Brene so much.

This is a disappointing rehash of many of the points from his previous book. Since I just read it and then purchase this one, it was disappointing because the books don’t seem to build off of each other very much and the subject matter is redundant for the most part.

Lots of books say how childhood occurrences affect one’s life in adulthood. Few state why. Even fewer suggest what to do about it. I came across this book from reading Dr Margret Paul’s works (she wrote the forward). I was very pleasantly surprised.

I tried to get past it but the female narrator is too bad to listen.
