Historia
Over the past three decades, citizens of democracies who claim to value freedom, tolerance, and the rule of law have increasingly embraced illiberal politicians and platforms. Democracy is in trouble - but who is really to blame? In Our Own Worst Enemy, Tom Nichols challenges the current depictions of the rise of illiberal and antidemocratic movements in the United States and elsewhere as the result of the deprivations of globalization or the malign decisions of elites. Rather, he places the blame for the rise of illiberalism on the people themselves.

The Very Best
Revisado: 10-26-24
I’ve spent the better part of the last nine years trying to figure out what the hell happened in this country—to people I love and acquaintances I trusted and strangers I at least assumed were sane.
No author—no book (and I’ve read over 100 on just this)—explains it more clearly, more definitively, or more unflinchingly than this one.
My second reading comes just ten days before the 2024 election and has helped me brace myself for what may be inevitable. God help us all.

Historia
There is a commonly accepted story about the rise of the Religious Right in the United States. It goes like this: With righteous fury, American evangelicals entered the political arena as a unified front to fight the legality of abortion after the Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. The problem is this story simply isn’t true.

Historia
Ever since evangelical Christians rose to national prominence, mainstream America has tracked their every move with a nervous eye. But in spite of this vigilance, our understanding hasn't gone beyond the caricatures. Who are evangelicals, really? What are they like in private, and what do they want? Is it possible that beneath the differences in culture and language, church and party, we might share with them some common purpose?

Historia
In a culture obsessed with food - how it looks, what it tastes like, where it comes from, what is good for us - there are often more questions than answers. Michael Ruhlman proposes that the best practices for consuming wisely could be hiding in plain sight - in the aisles of your local supermarket. Using the human story of the family-run Midwestern chain Heinen's as an anchor to this journalistic narrative, he dives into the mysterious world of supermarkets and the ways in which we produce, consume, and distribute food.

An absolute pleasure to listen to a book so informative, so well-researched and so wonderfully narrated! I learned so much about a world I only knew in passing, and it was so engagingly presented, I am going on to other books by this author as well as others read by the same narrator. Just loved this book! Makes me want to fly to Cleveland!

Historia
We live in a factory-made world: modern life is built on three centuries of advances in factory production, efficiency, and technology. But giant factories have also fueled our fears about the future since their beginnings, when William Blake called them "dark Satanic mills". Many factories that operated over the last two centuries - such as Homestead, River Rouge, and Foxconn - were known for the labor exploitation and class warfare they engendered, not to mention the environmental devastation caused by factory production.

Excellent Read
Revisado: 01-02-22
Comprehensive, engaging and informative overview of gigantic manufacturing operations and their societal impact—not only upon the people who toil in them and the surrounding communities affected, but on the consumers detached from many of the costs of these “behemoths” who enjoy the benefits of their production.
My only criticism is the reader’s use of accents in dialogue within the prose. Not really necessary, and not very good. But everything else about his reading is fantastic!
I’ll be thinking about the ramifications of this book for some time to come, and will never look at my I-phone in quite the same way.

Best by Far!
Revisado: 08-31-21
This is unequivocally the best book on nutrition I’ve ever read, and I’ve read more than a sensible person ought to read. I’ve gone Atkins, did South Beach, tried Ornish and Powter, went Paleo, tried Keto and have sworn off sugar time and time again.
Finally, a well-researched, nearly encyclopedic overview of all the misinformation culminating in a sensible approach anyone can understand and anyone can follow. Last book on the subject I’ll ever need to read. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
And, to boot, the style is engaging, spiked with narratives, and totally engrossing. The narration is excellent! Can’t praise enough!

Russia expert Luke Harding lays out the most in-depth look to date at the Trump campaign's dealings with Russia. Beginning with a meeting with Christopher Steele, the man behind the shattering dossier that first brought the allegations to light, Harding probes the histories of key Russian and American players with striking clarity and insight. Harding exposes the disquieting details of the Trump-Russia story - a saga so huge it involves international espionage, offshore banks, sketchy real estate deals, mobsters, money laundering, disappeared dissidents, and more.

Well-written, easy-flowing. A must-read for those open to well-researched truth. (Flynn admitted guilt just yesterday!) I had no idea Trump's connections to Russia date back to the last 70's! Though I knew a good deal of the information already (news junkie)-- there was enough revelation to keep me riveted.

Alternative Medicine (a.k.a. "woo")
Revisado: 05-22-17
What disappointed you about The Body Keeps the Score?
I purchased it based on several five-star, highly enthusiastic reviews. Turns out it is filled with alternative approaches to treatment ranging from the questionable to the nonsensical. The supposed "research" confirming the efficacy of these practices (yoga, "EMDR" (!), animal therapy, theater therapy) in treating something as serious as PTSD (especially the developmental sort) are not confirmed in the larger scientific community at all. Most of the book is an extended info-mercial for the author's treatment center and other materials.
Has The Body Keeps the Score turned you off from other books in this genre?
I will stay away from anything labeled "alternative." Who needs an "alternative" to real medicine or real science?!?
Which character – as performed by Sean Pratt – was your favorite?
Sean Pratt's delivery was exemplary. I would definitely listen to anything he narrates that might be of interest to me.
What character would you cut from The Body Keeps the Score?
Bessel Van Der Kolk, M.D.
Any additional comments?
I can't remember when I read a book that left me feeling so hopeless.
