Historia
When a young man is found gruesomely murdered in a London houseboat, it triggers questions about three women who knew him. Laura is the troubled one-night-stand last seen in the victim’s home. Carla is his grief-stricken aunt, already mourning the recent death of yet another family member. And Miriam is the nosy neighbor clearly keeping secrets from the police. Three women with separate connections to the victim. Three women who are – for different reasons – simmering with resentment. Who are, whether they know it or not, burning to right the wrongs done to them.

Paula has such a great intellect and beautiful pen
Revisado: 03-18-23
I am not sure how she does it, but she is able to create insites into each of the various character's minds as if she herself is young, old, handicapped, hurt, vengeful, damaged, intellectual, mind slipping with age, caring, with limited horizons, etc. I felt each of those emotions from the characters without hesitatation.
She weaved together a fantastic story.
Spoiler below (don't read if that matters):
The reason I gave 4/5 on the story is there was no reason to bring back the bad guy at the end. That was not necessary to the story and it felt forced just for tying in the letters. Plus it was preposterous that this is the first time we hear that he was not killed in the opening event. Miriam would have been frightened throughout the book and would have said why.

Historia
This lush novel, set in 1766 England and America, evokes an era ripe with riot and revolution, from the teeming streets of London to the sprawling grounds of a Virginia plantation. Mack McAsh burns with the desire to escape his life of slavery in Scottish coal mines while Lizzie Hallim is desperate to shed a life of sheltered subjugation to her spineless husband. United in America, their only chance for freedom lies beyond the Western frontier - if they're brave enough to take it.

Highlight was learning about the huge gap between the classes in England and Scotland during the Colonial days of America and how/why so many of the early settlers came to America.

Forgotten history
Revisado: 05-24-21
Absolutely loved the history part. I will be traveling through that area in an RV this summer. How much more meaningful it will be now. Same area that the family in the Grapes of Wrath started out from, years later. Never knew this chapter in our country existed but am so glad that I was exposed to it.
Not as much into the details of the investigations. Not my cuppa tea.
Chronicle 3 could have been an epilogue.

Just beginning to take retirement seriously and this is a good first book to get me thinking about the subjects that matter. It was also helpful to see the author's opinions along with others on different topics while I develope my own opinion.

Historia
Harry August is on his deathbed. Again. No matter what he does or the decisions he makes, when death comes, Harry always returns to where he began, a child with all the knowledge of a life he has already lived a dozen times before. Nothing ever changes. Until now. As Harry nears the end of his 11th life, a little girl appears at his bedside. "I nearly missed you, Doctor August", she says. "I need to send a message". This is the story of what Harry does next, and what he did before, and how he tries to save a past he cannot change and a future he cannot allow.

The author told a very enjoyable story about an interesting, and could be any one of us, character while the complex concept of the book unfolded a little deeper each chapter.

Historia
We expect our judges to be honest and wise. Their integrity and impartiality are the bedrock of the entire judicial system. We trust them to ensure fair trials, to protect the rights of all litigants, to punish those who do wrong, and to oversee the orderly and efficient flow of justice. But what happens when a judge bends the law or takes a bribe? It’s rare, but it happens. Lacy Stoltz is an investigator for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct. She is a lawyer, not a cop, and it is her job to respond to complaints dealing with judicial misconduct.

Listened to this book while under stay-at-home rules for COVID-19. Took it on hikes to the mountain behind our subdivision and could feel the joys and sorrows of that time in our history and within that landscape. Stopped a different book just so I could start this one for the total Arizona experience and loved it.

Historia
Shocking and controversial when it was first published in 1939, Steinbeck's Pulitzer prize-winning epic The Grapes of Wrath remains his undisputed masterpiece. Set against the background of Dust Bowl Oklahoma and Californian migrant life, it tells of Tom Joad and his family, who, like thousands of others, are forced to travel west in search of the promised land. Their story is one of false hopes, thwarted desires, and broken dreams, yet out of their suffering Steinbeck created a drama that is intensely human, yet majestic in its scale and moral vision.

The story and the plot are masterful. But what struck me about this book is how deep of a thinker Steinbeck was that he expressed through each of these characters his profound insights on life and the human condition.
