Historia
England, 1926: Wedgefield Manor, deep in the tranquil Essex countryside, provides a welcome rest stop for Jane and her matchmaking Aunt Millie before their return to America. While Millie spends time with her long-lost daughter, Lillian, and their host, Lord Hughes, Jane fills the hours devouring mystery novels and taking flying lessons - much to Millie's disapproval. But any danger in the air is eclipsed by tragedy on the ground when one of the estate's mechanics, Air Force veteran Simon Marshall, is killed in a motorcar collision.

Spunky heroine
Revisado: 03-28-25
Jane is an independent-minded woman in an age where women were encouraged - expected - to be dependent. The plot is intriguing and the characters are developing nicely from book one…
BUT the narrator is awful! Her speech habits are so annoying. At the end of almost EVERY sentence, she drops her voice. I’m not sure I want to use my credits on this series because of the narrator, but I definitely would continue with a different narrator or a non-audio book.

Historia
Two little girls stand with their heads bowed in my living room. I’m told they’re my granddaughters. Daisy is nine, and Alice seven. Daisy is the spitting image of her mother. This is the first time I’ve met them since my daughter and I fell out after she married that waste of space, Vince. They’ve come to live with me because their mother — my daughter — was murdered. In her own home while they slept close by. I think Vince killed her. But the police can’t prove it. I’ve always known he was no good. He treated my daughter like dirt. I said he’d cheat on her — but she wouldn’t listen.

Slow story with foul language
Revisado: 01-24-25
If the swear words were removed from this book, it would be a good bit shorter. I don’t know if the author is trying to convey what a loser the father is by having him swear so much, but it’s overdone and irritating.
I don’t often give up partway through a story, but this wasn’t worth the time.

Could have been cut down without losing any interest
Revisado: 11-28-24
The story was intriguing and the characters well developed. But…
This was soooo long! It was plagued by a lot of unnecessary details that weren’t even close to being critical to the story. At 10.5 hours, it could easily be made shorter without compromising the story.
I also had trouble keeping track of all the characters. In a traditional book, I could have paged back to find when the characters were introduced.
I’ll probably watch for the next in the series, but maybe I’ll keep a notepad handy to write characters’ names down.

Fortune’s determination to prove murder against all odds.
Revisado: 06-10-24
I thought the rescue of Carter was a condensed version, but maybe more detail would have been too gory.
All in all, another great Sinful story with the usual Celia and Gertie escapades plus new excitement. Can’t wait for the next one to come out!

Tedious

If this is what the “Golden Age” of mysteries was like, I’m surprised anyone kept reading or writing them. I’m glad I only spent one credit for six books instead of one each.

Good story, annoying narrator
Revisado: 09-20-23
This narrator makes almost all the characters sound like they’re 10 years old or have been huffing helium- or maybe both.
The story is decent, though, with a good story line and interesting characters, so I’ll continue with the series.

Always enjoy Mrs. Pollifax and Barbara Rosenblat
Revisado: 08-28-23
I first read the Mrs. Pollifax books back in the 1970-80s when the Cold War wasn’t such a distant memory. Now that I’m closer in age to Mrs. P, I’m getting new pleasure from reading about her pluckiness and finding a second calling in her old age.
Barbara Rosenblat is my favorite narrator and brings wonderful life to all her characters. Five stars to both these ladies!

Better than the first one
Revisado: 02-03-23
The first one drove me nuts about their inept handling of a new business. They constantly complained about lack of money, but frequently went shopping and eat out. They complained about having not enough time to get ready, but they somehow already had bookings without a website or brochures. When they did pick up their brochures they had pictures taken before they did renovating. It didn’t make any sense at all.
This one isn’t as inconsistent and the characters are developing well. The murderer got to be obvious, since everyone else had been blamed and exonerated.
The author is leaving lots of room for relationships between characters and future plot lines

Wasn’t expecting soft porn
Revisado: 08-12-22
I love Jana Deleon’s Miss Fortune series and expected to enjoy this as much. What I wasn’t expecting was explicit sex scenes. The story could have been told just as well without them.
This book would have earned four stars if it hadn’t been for that. The story (sans sex) was good, exciting and full of Deleon’s quirky characters.
