Thoroughly absorbing!
Revisado: 05-24-24
Superbly narrated, as usual by Julia Whelan, full of emotion, humility and authenticity. Kristin Hannah always captures me from the start with her engaging historical storytelling, full of context, place, and detail. Love learning about pockets of history this way. This will stay with me for a long time. And I appreciate the author’s notes at the end. Keep writing!!

Revisado: 12-01-23
Interesting and fairly engaging story but the narrator was difficult to take. I would not recommend listening to this book - I’d recommend reading it yourself. Would be much better.

Historia
In a sleepy seaside town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth "Evvie" Drake rarely leaves her large, painfully empty house nearly a year after her husband’s death in a car crash. Everyone in town, even her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and Evvie doesn’t correct them. Meanwhile, in New York City, Dean Tenney, former Major League pitcher and Andy’s childhood best friend, is wrestling with what miserable athletes living out their worst nightmares call the "yips": he can’t throw straight anymore, and, even worse, he can’t figure out why.

Historia
Xanthe has always had an affinity with some of the antiques she finds. When she touches them, she can sense something of the past they come from and the stories they hold. When she has an intense connection to a beautiful silver chatelaine, she has to know more. It is while she’s examining the chatelaine that she’s transported back to the 17th century, where it has its origins. She discovers there is an injustice in its history. The spirit that inhabits her new home confronts her and charges her with saving her daughter’s life, threatening to take Flora’s if she fails.

Difficult to get through. Narration inconsistent in tone and volume. Read like a children’s book, overly dramatized. Holes in the story. Fun to time travel but will search for other options.

Clever plot, educational, riveting
Revisado: 05-25-23
Wrenching story, could sympathize with both sides. Kept me riveted. Loved learning about history through the story.
In the first half the volume was all over the place and I kept having to adjust it, having a hard time hearing some characters, while others were too loud. By the second half, that seemed to have been corrected. Still worth a listen!

So sad this trilogy is over! Loved every minute, loved how India (and Paris) came alive and how Joshi perfectly conveyed every emotion. Narrator was excellent— I’m off to search for another book she read! Highly recommend all three books.

Revisado: 12-03-22
Hooked from the start! So much fun and so much depth, and a zillion kernels of truth. Well-developed, relatable characters whom I’ll miss now that I’ve reached the end. Loved the sophisticated word-nerd humor and Julia’s personal explanation post script. Can’t wait for more from her!!

I could listen to Julia Whelan read a granola bag. And now she’s reading her own work?! I devoured this— loved the sophisticated humor, the literary references, and the trajectory. Kept me riveted. How she creates the many voices and accents - and keeps them all straight! - is mind boggling!
Looking forward to many more Julia stories!

Ugh
Revisado: 09-13-21
I got through it, but so depressing. And predictable. This is the third Hannah book I’ve listened to, and I loved the others, and enjoyed learning about history. Not this one though. I found it sad and dreary, the storyline thin and slow. I didn’t care for the melodramatic and unsophisticated performance either.
