What did you love best about Morning Star?

Battle scenes were great.

What did you like best about this story?

Veeeery complex characters.

Which scene was your favorite?

Claw drill scene (not a huge spoiler)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nah, too long.

Any additional comments?

Sevro is one of my favorite characters of all time.

If you could sum up Term Limits in three words, what would they be?

The Tea Party saves the world.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Term Limits?

Probably when it becomes clear that every major character is totally happy to accept the assassination of 3 ranking congressmen because every major character agrees that a balanced budget is so critical. There is literally not a major character in the book who doesn't ultimately think that all those attacked and killed didn't clearly deserve to die. It leads to some pretty surreal scenes where people are sitting at a table and OF COURSE we all agree that murdering representatives is an appropriate response to waste, fraud, and abuse.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

It would be direct to video and available through mail order only on Breitbart or Drudge, so it would probably be something about buying gold bullion along with the DVD.

Any additional comments?

Well written and entertaining, but the premise is totally bonkers.

If you could sum up Dawn of Wonder in three words, what would they be?

Better than some.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dawn of Wonder?

The leap off the cliff.

Which scene was your favorite?

None.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nah, too long.

Any additional comments?

This is really more YA fiction than adult epic fantasy. It's very well written but ultimately suffers from some tragic flaws. (**MILD SPOILERS**)

1) The "boy without a family enters elite school and makes wisecracking friends" meme is so over played as to be laughable at this point. We get it. The headmaster is mysterious, one of his classmates is tough to win over, one of the other kids is out to get him and probably actually nefarious, the classes are hard. We get it.
2) Can we please get some epic fantasy where the character isn't named something that rhymes with "Jayden?" Aeden, Valyn, Kaedan, etc etc. When I started listening and realized that the protag was named Aeden I almost stopped right there.
3) Aeden's weakness is so unbelievable and reminds me of Kvothe's in Rothfuss's novels. We get 50 pages about how the kid is the best at everything around and preternaturally confident/gifted/etc and then some minor thing happens and they fall to pieces. In Rothfuss's books Kvothe loses his mind if he can't play his lute. In this one this kid who helps fight off wolves and nearly kills himself jumping off a cliff to save his friend literally sinks to the ground like spaghetti noodle if the person charging him with a sword sort of reminds him of his father. Oh by the way, he doesn't actually hate his father, just loses all muscular tone when an attacker makes him think about dad. It's just bizarre and creates some really weak scenes.
4) There are also these weird scenes where Aeden has spent weeks to months leading up to a critical decision and turning point and then is willing to throw his life away because he refuses to even talk about certain subjects. Once again it feels very forced. The exam scene where he has to talk about other cultures is just awful. He basically has a Kobayashi Maru moment in one room and then goes into the next and is willing to be thrown out of the Academy because he won't even discuss the culture he hates? Doesn't hold water.

What made the experience of listening to Power Down the most enjoyable?

Like many others have said the action almost never stops. It's pretty fun to listen to since it's basically all gunfights and the like.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yeah quite a bit. It's not a spoiler to say that true disaster is just around the corner.

Which character – as performed by Peter Hermann – was your favorite?

None of the characters were particularly interesting.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There's some flag-waving that can be a bit heavy handed.

Any additional comments?

Only thing that bothered me is that the anatagonist is a very confusing character. There's nothing about his presentation that makes you believe that he's basically just waiting to destroy the entire world he lives in.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Girl with All the Gifts to be better than the print version?

They're probably equal. It's not one of those books that I think is clearly better one way or the other.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Fairly disappointed. The very end is actually kind of silly. I really didn't like the ending. I was surprised by how many people gave glowing reviews.

Which character – as performed by Finty Williams – was your favorite?

Melanie or Parks.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nah.

Any additional comments?

The coolest thing in the book (this is not a spoiler) is how you realize that the way everything looks in the first few chapters is not reality. There are some themes (e.g. parenthood) which are more skirted than developed. The absolute worst thing was the Dr. Caldwell figure, such a caricature of the scientist blind to anything but their work.

Revisado: 02-14-15

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Only if they were really into fantasy.

Would you be willing to try another book from Brian Staveley? Why or why not?

Yeah I'll probably read the 3rd one. I loved the Emperor's Blades but I feel like this book is a step back not forward.

What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?

He does a great job, doesn't go overboard with voices.

Could you see The Providence of Fire being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Possibly a movie, mostly because the Ketral would be so fun to film.

Any additional comments?

-glad we got to see more Ketral in action
-overall story was pretty confused. didn't like how no one ever knows what's going on, seems like the whole thing is a "kent-kissing goat f***" as the author would say
-not really sure what's going to pull this all together in Book 3
-like I said it just seems like a step backwards
-the birds are half the fun, and they are basically absent from the story
-totally confused about the role of the Ksestrim. not in a good way.
-also kind of weird how crazy things happen all the time and everyone knows about leeches, but no one ever seems to put the two together, "well yeah that's probably just a leech." instead everyone is just always stunned that something weird or unexplained is going on. kind of a major story flaw.

Where does Fourth of July Creek rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 20%

What did you like best about this story?

Pete was the most interesting character. But by the far the most gripping/haunting parts were the Pete/Rose chapters.

What does MacLeod Andrews and Jenna Lamia bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Andrews is probably the best narrator I've heard. The first time he has an outburst as Benjamin Pearl I jumped in shock in my car.Lamia totally steals the show. You want to jump through the speakers and hug her and tell her it will all be ok.

If you could take any character from Fourth of July Creek out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Ha ha. Pete and the old man who takes in foster kids are probably the only ones who wouldn't tell you to go to hell or hold a gun to your face. But I'm not even sure about that. I'm going to say Rose because she would probably need the meal.

Any additional comments?

Incredible book. I think if you look at the reviews that are lower than 5 stars you'll see that most of them just found the book too depressing. That's not really the same as saying it wasn't a good book.

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I think if it's billed as horror it should actually be scary rather than just vaguely creepy.

Would you be willing to try another book from Stephen King? Why or why not?

Yes of course, overall he's very enjoyable.

Have you listened to any of David Morse’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No but the narration is great, some people dog in in reviews but the guy does a great job.

Was Revival worth the listening time?

Barely. There is literally NOTHING scary in this book until the last maybe 45 minutes. Compare to Salem's Lot which is terrifying basically all the way through. Even the horror that is there is more existential than anything else.

Any additional comments?

The best part of this book had nothing to do with horror and was just a good yarn about a kid growing up in the 60s and being a musician. Maybe King should just be writing novels without trying to be scary? Seriously the horror stuff seems to be tacked on by an editor after the fact.

Would you listen to The Martian again? Why?

no, it's mostly a thriller and therefore not really the kind of book that you listen to more than once.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?

The first launch from NASA is really well written.

What about R. C. Bray’s performance did you like?

Everything, is a fantastic narrator. Doesn't overdo the voices but definitely plays it up a little bit.

Any additional comments?

This is really well written and the physics background is really fun. I almost wonder if this would've been better as a shorter book like a novella. The basic formula is

a) everything seems to be going okay
b) disaster which seems like it will scuttle everything
c) creative resolution of disaster

It's not bad but the fact that it repeats over and over and over gets fairly old. I actually didn't finish the book just read a summary of the last few hours on Wikipedia.

Where does The Emperor's Blades rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 5% It's incredible.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Emperor's Blades?

When you find out what Hull's Trial is going to be.
When you figure out what the evil leech's well is.

What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?

Didn't overdo the voices, a few subtle accents but didn't go crazy.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Some parts of this book are just laugh out loud funny. It's one of the only epic fantasy books that incorporates profanity really well. Instead of something fancy like "By the goddess!" or "to the seven hells!" the characters in TEB just say f***.

Any additional comments?

As others have noted there are a few loose ends. Motivations are not always clear and when they are not they are only sporadically set up for a later answer.

Probably the biggest confusion is why the 2 princes are willing to be abused and nearly tortured for 8-10 years, this is particularly true for Kaiden who doesn't even understand why he's with the monks.

It's also true for Yurl (sp?), why does he go through the entire training? Couldn't he be 90% as cruel and nasty without risking his life for 10 years?

Lots of people compare this to Abercrombie, Rothfuss, Riyira, Kingkiller, etc, this is WAAAY better. If some of those left you a little unsatisfied this will not. I've been trying to find my next fantasy series since Mistborn and this is as good as that. Truly a "driveway" title.
