Narration was painful

I loved the other books in the series and was so excited for this one. The story was the weakest of all the books but still enjoyable. The narration made the book hard to finish. Wish I had just read it instead.

Not one of Winter’s better books

The reviews I saw were all good so I was surprised that Sam just wasn’t likable. She crashed her bike and blamed Alex. Alex was sweet and kind and took the blame. Sam stayed hostile and rude and I just couldn’t understand why Alex worked so hard to connect. The dogs were the final straw for me though. Sam “bonded” with the dogs so she could spy on their owners. The dogs then saved her life and she walked away from them with zero care that they could die. The book keeps saying what a good person she is, I just didn’t see it.

I wanted to like it and just couldn’t

To start, I know that 1st person narration is difficult to pull off, this story did not do that. “He said, she said, I said” were probably the most used words in the book and it just got old. It didn’t help that the narrator had long, frequently awkward pauses before adding those words. At other times unnecessary words were added, maybe as filler? For example “before long … (blaa blaa) eventually happened. Was it before long or eventually? All that being said, my biggest issue was the story line itself. The main character was kidnapped by trolls at 14 and held for years being beaten and tortured but within minutes of escaping she fit into “normal” society and on top of that was horny AND sexually experienced? Almost every guy she met was hot and got her thinking about sex? After years of abuse and torture I just can’t see that. Maybe I’m being unfair but it seems to me that even trained military men would have some PTSD after years of slavery, abuse, torture and near death experiences. That this woman, who was a child when she was kidnapped, doesn’t show any trauma reaction just isn’t plausible to me. I think if they take out the couple sex scenes and re package the book for you did adult readers it would probably be better.

Couldn’t get past the narration

I will be honest I didn’t finish the book. I only made it through 2 chapters before the choppy narration made me decide that it just wasn’t worth it.

Didn’t enjoy narration

I enjoyed the story but the narration was hard to listen to. I almost returned the book because of if. Some of the voices came across as caricatures more than anything else. At times it felt like screaming. That being said I enjoyed the story and the characters. It would not have been worth a credit but it was worth the sale price. I think I have listed to Lori Prince before and don’t remember hating her narration before. Not sure what happened here.

realatable

I really enjoyed the book but also found it relatable. It is not one of those books that expects you to make a 180° change and maintain it for the rest of your life. Not everyone has the same goals and we all have to find the Balance between what we want and what we are willing and able to do. I’m really glad I got the book. It was worth the time.

Narration could be a little better

I did like the story but I know the supernatural angle is not for everyone. The narration could be a little better. The difference in the voices for the characters was minute. Sometimes I just wasn’t sure who was talking and then had to go back and replay. Either way I enjoyed the book end it was well worth my one credit.
