Historia
Julie fully expected to be breathing at the end of the trip - but driving into Death Valley felt like giving up, surrendering. She'd spent years battling a mysterious illness so extreme that she often couldn't turn over in her bed. The top specialists in the world were powerless to help, and research on her disease, chronic fatigue syndrome, was at a near standstill. Having exhausted the plausible ideas, Julie turned to an implausible one. Going against both her instincts and her training, she followed the advice of strangers she'd met on the Internet.

Can't talk, reading a pageturner about ME/CFS and mold!
Revisado: 01-28-22
As a patient, I related heavily to Julie's journey with ME. I appreciated her scientific perspective as she takes the reader on a journey through the darkest parts of a misunderstood condition to explore treatments outside what medicine usually recommends. I learned so much about my own illness, its history, and mold research.

Historia
The Vignes twin sisters will always be identical. But after growing up together in a small, Southern Black community and running away at age 16, it's not just the shape of their daily lives that is different as adults, it's everything: Their families, their communities, their racial identities. Many years later, one sister lives with her Black daughter in the same Southern town she once tried to escape. The other secretly passes for White, and her White husband knows nothing of her past.

Best book I've read in a long time
Revisado: 08-03-20
The Vanishing Half is an incredible novel, elegantly spanning decades, generations, and an entire country. Bennett raises deep questions around identity, race, and family through nuanced characters. Bonus points for a trans-masc romantic interest, and writing that poignantly speaks to the Black queer experience.
I've gone on to recommend this book to three different friends, all of whom had already read it and also had glowing reviews. Please do yourself a favor and get this book!
