Historia
When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a young girl disappears in the aftermath, Sarah Tucker becomes obsessed with finding her. Accustomed to dull chores in a childless household and hosting her husband’s wearisome business clients for dinner, Sarah suddenly finds herself questioning everything she thought she knew, as her investigation reveals that people long believed dead are still among the living, while the living are fast joining the dead.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

Feel good feminism
Revisado: 05-21-23
For all its seemingly serious themes, this is a feel good kind of story in the manner of Fredrick Backman’s tales. Enjoyable listen. Improbable plot.

Historia
Yasmin Ghorami is 26, in training to be a doctor (like her Indian-born father), and engaged to the charismatic, upper-class Joe Sangster, whose formidable mother, Harriet, is a famous feminist. The gulf between families is vast. So, too, is the gulf in sexual experience between Yasmin and Joe. As the wedding day draws near, misunderstandings, infidelities, and long-held secrets upend both Yasmin’s relationship and that of her parents, a “love marriage”, according to the family lore that Yasmin has believed all her life.

Another winner from Ali
Revisado: 05-13-23
Well told story about love, guilt, shame and marriage. About infidelity and honesty and the impact of their parents’ marriage on children. And the assumptions we make about our parents’ lives. I agree that the narrators voice that fits the central character so well, is distractingly accented for characters who are not Indian. But I found it a minor flaw in an excellent listen.

Pedestrian writing, formulaic plot.
Revisado: 12-22-22
Good narration of very average writing. It’s all plot without any pretense of character development, but sadly the plot isn’t that great. The first person narrator (in the story, not the reader of the audiobook) makes assumptions with certainty but without much credibility. And amazingly, they’re always correct.

Historia
The young man with the shock of white-blond hair lay spread-eagled on the floor, surrounded by fallen books. His hand reached out to the scattered pages, as though he was trying to tell her something. But who is he? How did he come to be killed in Flora’s ordinary little bookshop? Flora finds out he was staying at the Priory Hotel, and when the gardener suddenly dies in its beautiful grounds only a few days later, she is certain that something untoward is happening in her quiet village by the sea.

Good example of why authors should not read their own work
Revisado: 07-10-22
This is an engaging story, nearly ruined by the author reading it. We have been spoiled by actors narrating stories. You might think that the author would be the best narrator, but you would be wrong. Brooks uses a “readerly” voice, that is nearly an asthenic monotone. I almost returned it after the first 10 minutes. It gets more bearable and there are moments when she abandons the weak drone with a spark of full voice, but I’d advise reading this one in print.

Obedient to a fault, Nori accepts her solitary life, despite her natural intellect and curiosity.

Don’t waste your time
Revisado: 10-18-21
While the first half of the book was tolerably written and interesting, the second half degenerated markedly. The little girl voice of Noriko was extremely irritating and multiple voices did little to ameliorate this third rate novel.

Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. Good story, narration too slow
Revisado: 05-15-21
Increase the speed to 1.2 or 1.3 unless you are looking for a sleep aid. While the writing style is somewhat pedestrian, the characters and plot make up for it.

The first novel of six in Trollope's series of the Chronicles of Barsetshire introducing the fictional cathedral town of Barchester and the characters of Septimus Harding, the Warden, and his son-in-law Archdeacon Grantly. The Warden concerns the moral dilemma of the conscientious Reverend Septimus Harding, who finds himself at the centre of a bitter conflict between defenders of Church privilege and the reformers of the mid-Victorian period.

A scrupulous conscience
Revisado: 04-26-21
The warden is a gentle soul who offers companionship and comfort to the aged pensioners in his charge. When a zealous reformer alleges that he is not entitled, under the original terms of the will that created the almshouse, to his current salary, the scrupulous cleric takes it to heart. Trollope’s satire is itself scrupulously fair as he gently skewers the clergy, the law, journalism and morals in muckraking. No evil, just human foibles. Perfect narration.
