Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Outstanding history
Revisado: 04-22-25
Wonderful story of which 80% are the actual truth. i loved the main character, Martha, and her husband and children. Wonderfully written. Difficult to read at times... because of the brutality. Author describes the harsh winter beautifully. it will all stay with me for a long time.

Historia
The year 1996 was the one that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at 16 to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind...until she met Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce showed her how much there was to love about the wind-swept beach town - and introduced her to photography, a passion that would define the rest of her life. By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer.

Wonderful characters
Revisado: 01-24-25
The setting was beautiful. Nicholas Sparks described it so well that I could imagine walking on that beach. Tragic story in so many ways... at first I did not think I will like it because there could not be a good outcome, but I did.

Beautiful relationships between the characters.
Revisado: 01-21-25
I enjoyed the audible version of this book. I especially enjoyed the relationships between all the characters. I am looking forward to another book by this well known celebrated author. As with his other books I was left with a feeling of wellbeing at the end.

Goodness prevails
Revisado: 06-12-24
I want to say it wa an amazingly beautiful story but it is also an terrible tragic haunting story. I loved the brave characters and hated the awful ones. My favorite characters was Allie and Poppie and Hannah and Lauren's mother. I love that goodness wins in the end.

Family is everything
Revisado: 02-18-24
I enjoyed this book immensely. the characters were clearly defined, each with it's own distinctive personalities.... some so lovable and others I detested, deservedly so. I loved all the possibilities of what might have happened to Theo... and how it came full circle in the end. Mostly, that made the book so enjoyable to me, was the delightful narrator. I am in my car a lot, every day... and listening to her delightful voice, telling this delightful intriguing story, made my trips so enjoyable.
