I didn’t know there were 38 ways to say methamphetamine.
Revisado: 03-12-25
The story is great! The history and information provided was mostly interesting. It was difficult to understand at times due to the narration.
This title had horrible narration by the Artificial Intelligence bot!!Numerous mistakes were made by AI. A few examples: Lucille has a gash to her head. It was read using the word for the sentence, The string wound around the pole. PI (Private Investigator) was read as pie. DJs was pronounced Dee Jay Ess. That doesn’t even cover all the different was amphetamine or methamphetamine were pronounced! Emphasis was put on the wrong syllables. Long vowels were used when they should have been short.

Historia
When three-month-old Lia Lee arrived at the county hospital emergency room in Merced, California, a chain of events was set in motion from which neither she nor her parents nor her doctors would ever recover. Lia's parents, Foua and Nao Kao, were part of a large Hmong community in Merced, refugees from the CIA-run "Quiet War" in Laos.

I thought it was AI.
Revisado: 02-20-25
I really liked the chapters about the family. I did not like the long chapters about the doctors, Hmong culture, etc. My biggest complaint about the book was the narrator. She mispronounced so many English words! Very few were medical terminology, which is usually the case. For a time, I thought the book was narrated by Artificial Intelligence (AI) because some of the phrases were not said with feeling or intonation. It seemed like it was a computer just reading the words. Had I thought about it though, I would have realized AI wouldn’t have made that many mistakes. I would estimate there were a minimum of 20 mispronounced words!

Disturbing, angering, yet enthralling—just a few words to describe listening to this book.
Revisado: 02-03-23
I couldn’t stop listening. Each chapter had me wanting to know how it all played out, but knowing it wouldn’t be as I imagined. Even the ending left me reeling. Colleen Hoover is a true literary genius. Verity is like no book I’ve ever read, or listenined to, ever before. That being said, the vulgarity and highly sexual content may turn some people off, but if you can get past that, it is well worth your time.

Historia
When I arrive unannounced at my husband's studio in need of a shoulder to cry on after hearing that my best student, Alex, has died, I see a pair of wineglasses drying by the sink, and my deepest fear is confirmed: my husband is having an affair. Most women would fall to their knees in tears and throw him out of the house - but I just can't bring myself to do it. Instead, I go home and cook a healthy dinner for our children, walk the dog, and unload the dishwasher without complaint. I need this marriage to work to protect a terrible secret of my own....

Maybe you can make it past the first 3 hours.
Revisado: 06-15-21
I tried, but I couldn’t force myself to continue on after the first 3 hours. Maybe the story gets better, but I didn’t want to find out. The story was depressing. Nothing good happens; There’s a death, a job promotion lost, and an affair. I would not recommend this book. In fact, I would put it in the “one of the worst” category.

Where was this recorded?
Revisado: 06-12-21
The story line was interesting, but the entire program sounded like it was recorded in a 6 x 8 cell—a metal one. It took a long time to get over the tinny sound the voices made. After one listens long enough, it is possible; However, if you stop it and start it later, you have to go through the adjustment period again. I thought the “island speak” was perfect. I only have Jamaica’s “island speak to go off of though.

Great story with rich characters
Revisado: 08-16-20
Excellent story, and the narrator does an excellent job with the voices from different countries around the world. However, the narrator does an awful job of reading and pronouncing words correctly. For example, one baby’s name is pronounced 3 different ways in one paragraph: Tee-onna, Tay-onna, and Ty-onna. Winding (said with a long i, as in kind) is pronounced winding (said with a short i, as in win). While the mispronunciation of the baby’s name does not detract from the story, it is extremely annoying to the grammar, spelling, and correct pronunciation geeks out there. The mispronunciation of the homophone does detract from the story because it does not make sense.
The way the story is written keeps the reader guessing at who the actual culprit may be. All of the characters have his/her own background story as they weave into the grand scheme of the story.
At first, the story was a bit hard to get into, but once more characters were introduced, it became harder to stop listening.

Long, tedious, and boring
Revisado: 06-27-20
The first 25 chapters were filled with some interesting cases. After that, I couldn’t handle it any longer. There weren’t cases of emergent trauma, but long drawn out descriptions of crisis prevention teams using too many acronyms. I skipped to the beginning of a few chapters, and finally gave up. I marked it as finished and cut my loss. That is 4 hours of my life I can never get back.
