Historia
A hero in the tradition of Jack Reacher, the Gray Man, and Mitch Rapp, Ty Stone isn't afraid to cross the line when the stakes are high enough and they're never higher than when a child is in danger. When a child goes missing from a busy interstate gas station, all leads point in the wrong direction. Ty Stone is afraid he's too damaged to help but his gut--and his conscience--won't let him sit this one out. Even as he's searching for the missing child, law enforcement is searching for him.

Pretty sure I wasted a credit on this
Revisado: 04-06-25
Even with a boxed set I don't think I got my credit's worth out of this. Kept waiting for the story and the MC to improve but it never happened. The MC (Ty Stone) is exhausting to deal with. The entire series is just repetitions of the guy making stupid decisions, rambling on with self-blame, contemplating killing himself, and then doing it all over again. Seemed to be big holes in the plots, e.g. clinics buying kids without even doing background checks on the mothers to make sure it wasn't a sting and as if law enforcement wouldn't find out. It didn't help that each book had a different narrator so there's no continuity and none of them stood out with their performances but the 3rd was the worst by far, sounded like a bad AI/automated voice half the time. In 25 hours of listening there's not a lot action or suspense that takes place and without mentioning spoilers the MC doesn't do much except screw things up. All in all these aren't well-written stories and I tend to keep the bar low for enjoying what I listen to.

Poorly written LitRPG, worse narration

This was a DNF, story lacks interest and the narrator makes it worse. Can't believe I wasted a credit on this.

It's okay but has its issues
Revisado: 01-10-25
In hindsight I probably shouldn't have listened to the last book since the first two were just okay. For a story that takes place several hundred years in the future, it has too many references to present day Earth. It's also annoying that the narration portrays some robotic voices like what you'd hear in sci-fi movies from the 1970s. For all of the tech advancement these races have at their disposal why is there so much focus on hand-to-hand combat with martial weapons. And finally you have main characters who die and there are no details about their experience. Finished this last book thinking the story would somehow turn around but its mediocre ending was typical of the other books in the series.

Not great, too short, disjointed story line
Revisado: 10-22-24
Initial reviews for this book seemed positive but the story is pretty disjointed. It jumps around quite a bit with not a lot of context so for a first book it was difficult to get a sense of world building. Would have been good to have a better understanding of the "magic" the MC possessed before entering this world, as well as how it operates with those who live there. Most books in this genre are at least twice as long so I may have been inclined to get the second book in the series if there was more content to build from in the first one.

Even free it's not worth it
Revisado: 08-31-24
When a book is free you have to wonder why and in this case it's the poor writing style. I'm guessing English isn't the first language for the author and it shows in the word choice, lack of editing, etc. The story is okay, has some issues with the plot and characters, but when the writing isn't up to par it detracts from the listening experience.

Good story, characters kind of suck
Revisado: 08-02-24
Enjoyed listening to the trilogy, excellent narration. Only issue is that all of the main characters seem to be more on the dislikable side than good. Kept hoping for some of them to end up with redeeming qualities or find justice for their actions but that doesn't seem to happen. Also, the ending doesn't provide much closure.

Historia
The Source, the natural wellspring of Magic in the world, is stretched to the breaking point. If gluttonous witchcraft and human usurpers are not curtailed, it will vanish from the Nine Realms, taking with it every legendary race, and the magical sway of all that is good in the world will disappear forever. Before that end, the gods themselves will wage a final destructive war on Creation. The quest to save Magic at all costs is at hand, and an ancient prophesy awakens.

Decent start, too short, senseless stopping point
Revisado: 07-15-24
Not sure how non-Tufo fans who enjoy fantasy would rate this book. A lot of the enjoyment is understanding the history of the characters from his other series. I enjoyed the story but I think it would have been less so if I hadn't listened to Indian Hill, Zombie Fallout, etc.
My major gripe is the length. Most fantasy books are at least twice as long and Tufo has had a recent tendency to just end a book at a point in the story that seems almost random. It's one of the reasons why I stopped listening to ZF and if he continues with this series where the books are 11 hours or shorter then I'll probably pass.

This series started out great and it gets better with each book. About 3/4 through I had guessed the two big reveals (cover provides hints) and that didn't affect my enjoyment. Can't wait for the next one.
