Everywhere around us are echoes of the past. Those echoes define the boundaries of states and countries, how we pray, and how we fight. They determine what money we spend and and how we earn it at work, what language we speak, and how we raise our children. In Tides of History, we prove that the key to understanding our modern world is in our past.

Historia
Most of us know we own too much stuff. We feel the weight and burden of our clutter, and we tire of cleaning and managing and organizing. While excess consumption leads to bigger houses, faster cars, fancier technology, and cluttered homes, it never brings happiness. Rather, it results in a desire for more. It redirects our greatest passions to things that can never fulfill, and it distracts us from the very lives we wish we were living. But it doesn't have to be this way.

Minimumlist book with a twist.
Revisado: 04-12-18
The author describes how and why you can and should do more with less. It can help someone who wishes to exist our self centered materialistic culture. He further encourages one to turn outward and use the gains of needing less to helping others more. I have been moving this way slowly for years and found joy all along the way. Wish I’d read this book twenty years ago. Author who reads the book has a nice voice.

Written by the world’s leading experts and campaigners, Modern Slavery: A Beginner’s Guide blends original research with shocking first-hand accounts from slaves themselves around the world to reveal the truth behind one of the worst humanitarian crises facing us today. Only a handful of slaves are reached and freed each year, but the authors offer hope for the future with a global blueprint that proposes to end slavery in our lifetime.

Well done.
Revisado: 10-15-16
This is what it says it is. It is a description of slavery as it exist in the world today. Obviously written by abolitionist, it chronicles everything from to the debt slavery so common in India to the Human trafficking prevalent in the West. While it does include some very specific narratives, it is a big picture book. Well done.

Historia
According to polls conducted by Gallup and the Pew Research Forum on Religion & Public Life, the majority of Americans fail basic tests about religion, including tests on their own faith. This is troublesome because religious literacy is about so much more than naming deities or knowing the stories of ancient history. For many of us, religion is a way to examine and understand ourselves. These 24 enlightening lectures offer you the chance to experience the world's religions from all angles – historical, theological, and cultural.

Fantastic but missing a few things
- De Sol-Pal en 08-18-15
Learned much. Very pleasant.
Revisado: 07-03-16
Dr. Berkson had a very pleasant voice and pace. There is much to be gleaned in this lecture which covers a multitude of different traditions. I like that he presents as much history in the formation of the belief systems as he does the belief systems themselves. He makes a pitch for religious tolerance in the final lecture that I subscribe to.

Historia
In this penetrating study, Carl Brasseaux looks beyond long-standing mythology to provide a critical account of early Acadian culture in Louisiana and the reasons for its survival. He convincingly dispels many received notions about the routes Acadians traveled from Nova Scotia to Louisiana, their original settlement sites, and the patterns of their subsequent migrations within the state, and closely examines the relations of Louisiana's Acadians with their black, Spanish, Indian, and Creole neighbors.

The Cajun Story 1600-1803
Revisado: 03-01-16
This is wonderful. It tells of how some Frenchmen came to live in Acadia.
It tells how these Acadian came to live life there. It tells how these Acadian were forced to leave and the hardships they faced in diaspora. It tells how they came together again in South Louisiana.
It tells how these Cajuns first thrived amongst the swamps and prairies.
It tells of strong families, innate stubbornness, and joy that still mark these beautiful people.

Historia
From 1897 to 1917 the red-light district of Storyville commercialized and even thrived on New Orleans' longstanding reputation for sin and sexual excess. This notorious neighborhood, located just outside of the French Quarter, hosted a diverse cast of characters who reflected the cultural milieu and complex social structure of turn-of-the-century New Orleans, a city infamous for both prostitution and interracial intimacy.

Good history of New Orleans 1800-1920
Revisado: 02-28-16
I grew up on the Westbank and downloaded this hoping to find out a little more about the hometown.
Not only does the book cover Storyville, but it lays out much of the race relations and history of NOLA in the hundred years preceding it. Jazz is a side item in the book as it focuses more on prostitution and efforts to control it at the turn of the century.

Central Europe's ancient civilizations have long been dominated by empires: The Roman Empire; the Habsburg Empire, based in Austria; and more recently, the Soviet Communists. But the decline of communism in the late twentieth century has unleashed old resentments, rivalries, and ambitions that have caused yet more war in this troubled region.

I like format and am grateful as they supply a good synopsis of whatever country/region that they cover. I only wish that they were longer and more detailed.

They state a short phrase in English.

Though the Greek and Roman crewmembers of the Argo II have made progress in their many quests, they still seem no closer to defeating the earth mother, Gaea. Her giants have risen - all of them - and they're stronger than ever. They must be stopped before the Feast of Spes, when Gaea plans to have two demigods sacrificed in Athens. She needs their blood - the blood of Olympus - in order to wake.

I am pretty much in love with this story, I have to admit I didn't cry a little when it ended. I liked the narrator for some of the previous story's slightly more but I still enjoyed this one just as much. Wish there were more books :)
