Historia
One of the great novels of 19th-century France, Flaubert draws a deeply-felt but sympathetic portrait of a woman who, having warned a country doctor and found herself unhappy with a rural, genteel existence, longs for love and excitement. Her aspirations and her desires lead her into a tragic spiral downwards.

Excellent abridged version
Revisado: 05-04-20
I love Madame B, the novel. And tho I'm a fan of the original, this abridged version is fantastic. The majority of the story is captured as well as all the emotion.
But it's Imogen that really makes this version shine. She delivers the best performance. She has the most perfect and passionate voice for Madame. She had the right whispers. The right outbursts. I can listen to her over and over.
I have multiple versions of the Madame Bovary novel and this is the best because of the performance.

over and over
Revisado: 12-27-16
over and over, I can listen to this over and over... it's fantastic.
wit and wisdom, tremendous and commonplace, as it is to be expected with Twain, is no surprise and hence not outstanding. yes, as is usual with his mature novels, Yankee is a pleasure for the humors, an expose of the natures.
what is truly exceptional here is the performance.
I have dozens of Twain audiobooks, lots of experience. I believe no one delivers him as well as Norman Dietz. his timing and timbre capture the soul of the story perfectly. and that is a necessity for Twain's works because his writing has a soul, a personality that delivers the meaning as much as the prose.
here Dietz delivers, more than on any other, with Sandy's monologues. she yammers train wreck worthy sentences, and Dietz nails them. everytime is a riot.
this book is a brilliantly delivered comic gem written with wisdom and stirred with emotion.
NOTE: not the best recording, sadly. for me all that is wonderful and entertaining in this novel outshine the sound quality. I hope that will be your experience as well.
cheers

"I saw the whale ahead of us, coming with twice his ordinary speed, and with tenfold fury and vengeance in his aspect. The surf flew in all directions about him and his course toward us was marked by a white foam which he made with continual violent thrashing of his tail; his head was about half out of water and in that way he came upon and again struck the ship." ok maybe not five star...
Revisado: 12-04-15
it may not be a five star book (like Moby dick or #middlemarch) but it would be a shame to cause someone to over look due to mediocre rate.
the book is short and straight to the point. a memoir of a fateful voyage.
the compelling part is not the prose but the story. what they went through... what happened along the way... it's amazing. and to consider the technology of the time, it's almost unbelievable they survived. it may have been terrifying.
really the worst part of the book is the prose. it is dry and blunt. it is a shame that the author was not a fancy lyricists that could bring the eloquence to the situation. however a poet would probably not have been first mate and possibly not survived.
I recommend the story as an amazing memoir of an incredible experience

sure it's great but...
Revisado: 12-03-15
yeah it's a great tale: classic, eloquent, rich... but it's Juliet's reading, is always Juliet's reading, that makes novels exceptional.
she reads so passionately, so richly intoxicating. her meter, her timing, her voices, her delivery, her characters... it's all perfect.
the recording, the sound, it's spot on.
This is a good story, professionally read. This is what audiobook should be.
a pleasure to listen to. again and again.

five stars, ten stars, FIFTY stars!
Revisado: 11-30-15
the best readings of the best shorts of Twain's. thie readings have so much personally, character, pizzazz! I've listened and relistened and listened again. can't give enough praise.
the recording sounds just a little tinny tiny sorta kinda dated, but just so to give it vintage feel. doesn't degrade the listen. however there is a lot of base in all the vocals. I enjoy it (i am a bass player coincidentally), but I could see how it may bother some as it is exaggerated.
there's really are the best of his shorts. I have all his books, all his shorts available on audible, and I'm sure this is the best collection.
if you're just starting with twain this is the book you need. if you have others and aren't sure if you need it- you need it. discard all doubt and get this book!
fifty stars!

can 5000+ people be wrong?
Revisado: 02-12-14
Can 5000+ppl be wrong? Well, george bush got elected…
this book is a meld of Saturday morning cartoons and pop vomit that you might find on the OC. Way too good guys always win. Way too see everything coming. Way too much of a waste of time for me to finish.
I'm such a sucker for advertising; I fell for the onslaught of praise. I was wrong. This is a goof, a joke, a silly story.
Try American Elsewhere or the Rook. They've got monsters and they've got material with some meat to it. And you don't feel stupider when you finished

reader is terrible
Revisado: 02-12-14
The reader is terrible. He’s plunging through the prose, mulling it into a mess.
He has no personality. No presence. No timbre. No timing.
It’s always like he’s falling forward, but without reaction.
He stole the life from the stories.

Historia
Ulysses is regarded by many as the single most important novel of the 20th century. It tells the story of one day in Dublin, June 16th 1904, largely through the eyes of Stephen Dedalus (Joyce's alter ego from Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man) and Leopold Bloom, an advertising salesman. Both begin a normal day, and both set off on a journey around the streets of Dublin, which eventually brings them into contact with one another.

there is no better book on audible
Revisado: 11-09-13
this is #1.
Ulysses is the single best book on audible.
One of the most incredible books of all time. Stream of consciousness… pure thought coming out in words. Simple and complex at once. A masterpiece. The masterpiece.
I thought nothing could make it better. I was wrong.
This reading brought the novel to life in no way I could have imagined. Any other reading pales in comparison. And it’s not just Jim Norton that gives a stellar performance. No no… Marcella Riordan … is amazing. absolutely amazing. She gives the end monologue so much sensuality that i get chills when I hear it.
I truly believe there is no better audiobook on audible.
i hope you get the pleasure

tale of 2 cities is tale of 2 cities. it's a landmark novel. it's my favorite Dickens. and this is the best of the versions. i have several versions and this is the one.
it is Simon Vance that makes the difference. he's perfect in this narration. he's better than any other. perfect articulation. perfect cadence. perfect tone. perfect meter. a perfect version.
in fact, i believe, this is one of the best of the audiobooks on audible. i have listened to this one over and over. maybe i've put it on a dozen times. why? this reading is poetry of sound and story. this is a pleasure to hear.
i hope you enjoy it.

LT has a theory about pets, particularly his Siamese cat. It had been their cat, not just his cat, but that was until he came home one day to find a note on the fridge from his wife saying she had left him. Recorded live at the Royal Festival Hall in London, this story demonstrates yet again that no one can tell a tale like Stephen King. Available only in audio!

dig it, and dig it well
Revisado: 11-09-13
King’s narration is not always well received. He’s bland, at times; he doesn't pull punches. He is unique. & some ppl hate his readings. when King reads he’s a hit or miss. Here he hits. He nails it.
This is a live reading. he is happy. He's wicked. You can hear a smirk on his face if you listen closely. he reads it right.
The story floored me. More wit than rotten; more homestead humor than horror. This is one of those real stories of real ppl in real places facing real problems. You see that here and there with a King short; this is one.
Now I like my King to have horror. Like in the Library Policeman (one of my favorites), great horror is what I expect. So when he tosses out a real story, and I love it, it catches me off guard. But even in the absence of the horror it is fantastic.
This is a great story. If your'e a King fan, as I am, you’ll probably dig it...
well...
