Slow start to the series but I’m so glad I kept reading

Genuinely hate the girl guard who’s name escapes me at the moment. So glad she’s not really in this one. Trent is developing such cool idealizations and the character building + world building sets a fantastic pace for someone who listens to audio books while working.

My toxic trait is that I say “into da bowl” whenever Jake does alchemy. Love this series, couple plot holes I’m sure system magic fixes but genuinely a good book

Excellent book

Good pacing, excellent dictation, and over before you want it to be. Great starting point for anyone not familiar with litrpg and even better for those burned out on litrpg and its numerous skill and level count.

Writing is good, but I think we’ve lost the plot

Some stories have a long mapped out journey, they hold our hands and tell us a story about something or someone we would come to love or care for. This story did that in the first 3 books. But what feels like a continuing story about the end of a story continues again after its end. I much rather would have loved if we got to hear young John, growing in a world of war, directionless and most of all showing the signs of youth he would grow from to become his future self. Instead after the big bad dies and the door to another world opens, we get a side story about a vague threat to humanity.

Travis baldree always makes for an interesting listen

I love the concept, story is written well enough though I felt for a first in the series it wasn’t meant to overload you with details just hint at a wider scope hopefully to expand on it in future books. For now it’s a fun read with everything a litRPG should have.

Not even 5 hours in and I’m hooked

The dialogue is top notch, worldbuilding excellent. Character chemistry is relatable and amusing. I listened to another book (between two fires) and it was so well written and serious I expected the same here but I’m so happily surprised and excited to hear this story. This book showed me the flexibility Christopher Buehlman has in his writing. The humor in this is so funny I belly laughed at some of the oddest moments. How he pulls off humor in a scene is so raw and natural that it sweeps your feet out and catches you off guard in a way that isn’t forced. There’s also plenty of serious moments though the characters themselves do not seem to have much issue with their challenges.

Not even done with the book yet but wow

I didn’t expect to cry, or to feel anything from this book. But after the torture, death, and a fate worse than death. I see the light and I feel the love. This whole book was written like a story straight from the Bible. Coming from someone non religious this would normally put me off but this was done masterfully. Good job

Overall story from book 1 to the end is cohesive. It’s a very good read great for kids who are a bit older and are interested in reading
