Historia
Polly, Annie, Elizabeth, Catherine, and Mary-Jane are famous for the same thing, though they never met. What they had in common was the year of their murders: 1888. The person responsible was never identified, but the character created by the press to fill that gap has become far more famous than any of these five women. For more than a century, newspapers have been keen to tell us that "the Ripper" preyed on prostitutes. Not only is this untrue, as historian Hallie Rubenhold has discovered, but it has prevented the real stories of these fascinating women from being told.

Excellent Book; Wonderful Narrator
Revisado: 07-23-24
I enjoyed this book. The stories of the lives of 5 women who are usually just mentioned by name, believed professions and the description of their wounds. Also a commentary on the tendency to place the killer and the extent of their evil above that of their victims especially if they don’t fit into society’s expectations. The narrator is one of the best I’ve heard, fluidly transitioning from reading factual accounts to reading dialogue with emotion and character.

Historia
At her execution Mary, Queen of Scots wore red. Widely known as the colour of strength and passion, it was in fact worn by Mary as the Catholic symbol of martyrdom. In 16th-century Europe, women's voices were suppressed and silenced. Even for a queen like Mary, her prime duty was to bear sons. In an age when textiles expressed power, Mary exploited them to emphasise her female agency.

So good

This author seems to present the research accurately and when two differing perspectives are given, states her reasoning of why she might chose one over the other. I started with ‘Threads of Life” and knew I had to read/listen to both. I enjoyed them both a lot. And will likely listen to them again on a regular basis and likely buy the physical books. If you’re on the fence, come over to my side and give these a listen, I don’t think you will regret it.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

It’s been a long time since I laughed so much during a book. Andi Arndt’s performance was top notch as always. Truly enjoyable.
