Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Sad but true
Revisado: 08-19-24
Much of what JD’s story is about is relatable in so many ways. Although I didn’t grow up in Appalachia my grandmother grew up in the poorest County in Ohio, Vinton County. My dad claimed to be a hillbilly and he was an alcoholic. Had it not been for my mom’s family and Italian Catholic heritage I don’t think I’d have ended up with the great life I have enjoyed. My mom’s entire family was loving and supportive to me and my 5 siblings, my literally hundreds of cousins and my Catholic education from the Sisters of Notre Dame made all the difference. Thank you for sharing your story JD.

WOW
Revisado: 06-22-23
I have read several books by Scott and this is the masterpiece for me. My dad was in WWII in the Fighting Thunderbirds 45th Infantry. So many of the places Scott wrote about were places that my dad fought in and for. He was almost 24 when he enlisted in the army and had a young son and a pregnant wife when he shipped out for Europe. All of the American men who served in WWII were heroes. And this is a great depiction of what they experienced. Thank you Scott for reminding us of how great the world would be without hate and violence. The love story behind scenes shows that.

Slow start but way worth the wait
Revisado: 12-13-20
I started listening to this and after 8 chapters I thought “HM can I get through this or did I make a mistake? “ After chapter 12 or so it was interesting and after about chapter 16 it really took off for me. The building of the characters in the first dozen chapters was necessary and the story ends up fabulous. I can’t wait to get my next Turow book!

I kind of remember the story of Treasurer Island but the way this great work by RLS was awesome and entertaining. What a pleasure it is to hear a classic in such form. Highly recommended.

Historia
It was 1928: a time of illicit booze, of Gatsby and Babe Ruth, of freewheeling fun. The Great War was over, and American optimism was higher than the stock market. What better moment to launch an expedition to Antarctica, the planet's final frontier? The night before the expedition's flagship launched, Billy Gawronski - a skinny, first-generation New York City high schooler desperate to escape a dreary future in the family upholstery business - jumped into the Hudson River and snuck aboard. Could he get away with it?

This wasn’t the plan. Judge Herman Calvert, 88, never thought he’d outlive his beloved wife, Marie. Yet now he finds himself alone, a grieving widower, desperate for escape from the home they built together, where every turn brings a painful reminder of his late wife. So the judge retreats to his lake cabin in rural Wisconsin, a place where an old man can find peace and solitude. A place where nature can take its course. But something new has moved in.

This was my first reading of this author and it was awesome. Not predictable and a little science fiction but well worth the reading. I will look for more writing by David Koepp.

I remember reading about Harpers Ferry in elementary school. But this writing has inspired me to be more appreciative of those who fight for freedom and liberty. James McBride continues to do great work and I look forward to his next writing.
