Historia
When General Douglas MacArthur arrived in Australia in March 1942, having successfully left the Philippines to organize a new American army, he vowed, "I shall return!" More than two years later he did return, at the head of a large U.S. army to retake the Philippines from the Japanese. The place of his re-invasion was the central Philippine Island of Leyte. Much has been written about the naval Battle of Leyte Gulf that his return provoked, but almost nothing has been written about the three-month long battle to seize Leyte itself.

LEYTE CAMPAIGN OVERLOOKED BUT ONE OF IMPORTANCE
Revisado: 02-21-22
Leyte 1944-The Soldiers' Battle By Nathan N. PreferNarrated by Jones Allen is one of the better histories of World War II. Chock .full of data with a day-by-day analysis of events. The book covers this campaign which officially started on 10/17/1944 (in reality 09/1944) and ended July 1, 1945. This audible rendition of this great book covers all the major players on both sides of the conflict. When one thinks of 1944 and World War II, immediately our thoughts go to Normandy and the D=Day invasion of France. But, the Leyte campaign was just as important as it was the first conflict involving major armies on both sides. The book does a great job of naming combat units, and brave individuals on the American side. And, I learned a lot about General Walter Krueger, who, it seems to me, was McArthur's Patton. The narration was superb. If you are interested in World War II history I can highly recommend this Audible selection.

We think of cults as bizarre, inexplicable or otherworldly places that only strange people inhabit, but cults and other abusive and high-demand groups (and relationships) are actually quite commonplace. In fact, the behaviors, social pressures and authoritarian structures that create cults exist to a greater or lesser extent in every human relationship and every human group. In the first in-depth research of its kind, the author interviewed 65 people who were born in or grew up in 39 different cultic groups spanning more than a dozen countries.

GUIDANCE FOR THOSE NOT BORN AND RAISED IN A CULT
Revisado: 02-15-22
Escaping Utopia-Growing Up in a Cult, Getting Out, and Starting Over By: Janja Lalich, Karla McLaren is an interesting Audible offering. Right off you should know that this is an academic text for sociologists, therapists, and psychologists as it deals with what it is like to grow up in a closed group, that sees everything outside of the group as evil or lesser than the group. The text contains first-person related stories by individuals born into a group or taken in as a child into a group. Most of us are all aware of groups like Scientology, Reformed Latter Day Saints, Transcendental Meditation Movement, etc. And this book really did teach me how to differentiate between those adults who foolishly decide to join controlling organizations and the tragedy of those born into such groups. It might be OK to say to an adult who joined "what were you thinking," or "how could you buy into that baloney." But it is certainly unfair to use that standard with people who had no choice and whose lives from birth to young adulthood were controlled. If you are one who does counseling this is a great audible selection.

Here is a tautly paced investigation of one the 20th century's most audacious art frauds, which generated hundreds of forgeries - many of them still hanging in prominent museums and private collections today. Provenance is the extraordinary narrative of one of the most far-reaching and elaborate deceptions in art history.

The more money the easier to fool
Revisado: 02-15-22
Provenance is about the Drew/Myatt art forgery scam. If this Audible book reveals anything it's that money doesn't equal smarts. And, if you want to believe something is real, it is real. Plus when palming off fakes on the upper crusties it pays to know one's way around the art of BS. That and lax gallery and museum security and verification. I'm closing I found the performance to be monotone and mechanical. While clear, to me it sounded like computer generated speech. It had an AI feel to it.

The Riddle of Emmon Bodfish An Enigmatic Man. A Mysterious Murder. By: Paul Holes, Peter McDonnell, Josh Sanburn Narrated by: Paul Holes, Jim Clemente is one of the better true crime podcasts I have listened to. The narration by individuals involved in the case is excellent. This listener felt as if he were riding along with the investigators. This true story has everything. Interesting individuals, clues, ciphers, etc. But, unlike most true crime presentations the authors and narrators made you feel for the victim. At times you could hear the sadness in their voices. You got to know all the people involved. This is the gold standard of true crime podcasts.

Historia
In 1999, Emmon Bodfish was murdered in his home in the wealthy enclave of Orinda, California, just east of San Francisco. For the young crime-scene analyst Paul Holes, it quickly became the most bizarre and surprising case of his storied career. It was immediately clear how Emmon had died: by being hit over the head with a heavy object. What wasn’t clear was who did it and why.

When he retired as the chief security officer of New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art, John Barelli had spent the better part of 40 years responsible not only for one of the richest treasure troves on the planet, but the museum's staff, the millions of visitors, as well as American presidents, royalty, and heads of state from around the world. For the first time, John Barelli shares his experiences of the crimes that occurred on his watch, the investigations that captured thieves and recovered artwork....

Title was misleading
Revisado: 01-03-22
This is a autobiography of the former head of security for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. While it covers John Barelli's career it is mostly about pilfering, the hoi poloi, and accidents. Performance was mechanical, on a par with a Jack Webb dialogue on the old Dragnet TV show.

Fasten your falx knives and grab the reins of your quadriga: Rivals 2! More Frenemies Who Changed the World is the funniest look at people who benefited the world through their hatred. This audiobook has it all: death beams, chariot races, flaming costumes, ear-munchers, party fleas, and whatever the opposite of epic poetry is.... No fact is too bizarre, no segue too surreal, and no sequitur is too non for this riotous sequel.

Revisado: 09-23-21
This original Audible offering is the second in the series. Needless to say I hope they do more. Scott McCormicks's take on these historical rivalries makes the listener remember the history while having a good laugh. The performance by the actors is great. And really, how can you improve on true stories of real people.

The culture wars are over and the idiots have won. This is a veteran journalist’s caustically funny, righteously angry lament about the glorification of ignorance in the United States. The three Great Premises of Idiot America: · Any theory is valid if it sells books, soaks up ratings, or otherwise moves units; anything can be true if someone says it loudly enough; "fact" is that which enough people believe. And "truth" is determined by how fervently they believe it.

IF ONLY EVERYONE AGREED WITH CHARLIE PIERCE
Revisado: 09-17-21
After about 3 1/2 chapters I just gave up. The author, Charles P. Pierce, is the stuff of NPR. A media outlet known for a particular point of view, Left, and not much room for any other views. Especially if one does not agree it's not the government's job to support your entertainment, anymore than it's the government's job to support the local marbles tournament. This book actually had potential, at least in the beginning, and I agreed with most of what the author said about the purveyors of Intelligent Design. Yep, we know Charlie. We did not need you to tell us that people tend to believe what they want to believe, whether they are theists, atheists, liberals, or conservatives. The problem is that he just attacks everyone he has determined is intellectually his inferior. And yeah, some are. But it just gets tedious. after listening for 3 hours. OK, your guy, Al Gore, lost the election. Like all people Gore was not all sweetness and light, and throughout his political career changed his mind, when it suited him. And he really changed it when he dumped Tipper for some younger masseuse. For Charlie it's all science all the time or not worth discussing. Philosophers, Theologians, and anyone who actually thinks about life and other people have nothing to say. Charlie fancies himself a modern day Thomas Huxley. Oh, by the way, there are some Founding Fathers he does not like just in case I forgot to mention that. To me, he's a bore. The performance by Bronson Pinchot just drones on. It's a feeble attempt to capture sarcasm while invoking Pinchot's monotone voice. In the end the story is just the author telling us about people he does not like. As I said, this Audible presentation is boring.

Did you know that most of our dinosaur fossils were discovered because two grown men absolutely hated each other? It’s true! Rivals! Frenemies Who Changed the World is a riotous audio exclusive, like if Monty Python taught your history class. Each volume of four 30-minute histories will dig into the petty name-calling and grumbling grudges that led to many of the world’s greatest advancements, all delivered with a cheeky sense of humor. Choose sides: Cope or Marsh, the jerks who discovered so many dinosaurs; Hamilton or Burr, whose rivalry fueled American politics; and many more....

Factual and very funny
Revisado: 09-12-21
Rivals! by Scott McCormick is a very good presentation of history presented in a humorous way. Which, make you pay attention and remember what is presented. No more, "Eyes front class!" Whether its Mary Queen of Scots, smelly sneakers, or Alexander Hamilton and his annoying Broadway persona, it's all hear. The ensemble performances are top notch. Hey, the stories are what they are. And if you really want to get serious the author gives you a great reading lists of biographies at the end. Thoroughly enjoyable.

What makes the Civil War so fascinating is that it presents an endless number of "what if" scenarios - moments when the outcome of the war (and therefore world history) hinged on a single small mistake or omission. In this audiobook, Civil War historian Edward Bonekemper highlights the 10 biggest Civil War blunders, focusing in on intimate moments of military indecision and inaction involving great generals like Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, and William T. Sherman as well as less effective generals such as George B. McClellan and Benjamin Butler.

Good rehash of major Civil War Events
Revisado: 08-03-21
If you want a good summary of major Civil War events and the prolongation of the war this is your book (audible selection.) There are some gems in this work, and the author, Edward Bonekemper III is good at taking iconic figures of the US Civil War down a notch or two, and for that he gets the credit. The performance seemed more scolding than dramatic.
