Entertaining for free, but not his best
Revisado: 05-03-20
I love Ben Winters' books, but though these stories had some clever ideas, funny parts, and his usual good characterization and dialogue, the resolutions all felt contrived or rushed (in writing). I do admire his capturing some of the elements of this period of isolation at home so accurately (and in the case of the first story, amusingly) when it's still a relatively new phenomenon-- even if it doesn't feel that way by now to most of us! I appreciated the distraction.

Historia
As an Indian wedding gathers a family back together, parents Rafiq and Layla must reckon with the choices their children have made. There is Hadia, their headstrong eldest daughter, whose marriage is a match of love and not tradition. Huda, the middle child, determined to follow in her sister’s footsteps. And lastly, their estranged son, Amar, who returns to the family fold for the first time in three years to take his place as brother of the bride.

Wonderful and heartbreaking

Beautifully and empathetically written -- I think many of these family issues are universal, and the author makes them so immediate and compelling.
